School Safety Update

From Head of School Dr. Patzlaff

Dear Clairbourn Family,

Safety is our priority, and I want to assure all of our parents that Clairbourn was completely safe today.

This morning we received information that San Marino High school was on lockdown. We immediately contacted the San Marino Police Department to find out if there was a threat that might spill out into the community. They assured us that there was no active situation on their campus and no threat to the community.

We continued to monitor the situation to ensure that no action was required. We were notified a little before noon that the police had apprehended a student suspected of making the threat and the situation was over.

This is the communication that was sent by San Marino School Board:

Early this morning, San Marino High School Principal Issaic Gates received a call from San Marino Police Department informing him of a specific violent threat against a named SMHS student and possibly his friends. SMPD Chief John Incontro communicated with Interim Superintendent Loren Kleinrock and other District administrators and determined that the threat was credible enough to be investigated.

After investigation, it was determined that there is no existing threat. One subject was taken into custody for criminal threats under Penal Code 422. No other subjects or suspects are involved. The SMPD has determined that it is safe for school to resume.

SMHS students should return to campus for 4th period, which begins today at 11:10 a.m. Students are welcome to return to campus at 10:30 a.m.

The District thanks Chief Incontro, the SMPD, and neighboring police departments for their prompt and thorough response and for keeping our students safe at all times.

Although this event had no direct impact on our school and our community, it can spark questions about Clairbourn’s preparedness for such an event.

Student safety is Clairbourn’s top priority. Clairbourn has partnered with law enforcement, community leaders, and other safety experts to ensure our procedures and emergency plans are effective and considered best practice.

Clairbourn students practice for all emergency situations on a regular basis including, fire, earthquake, and lockdown. We take the safety of our students very seriously, and our staff is trained to know what to do in each of these events.

We want to be sure that, while the staff are alert to community activity, the students can focus on their own work of learning, growing, and playing in an environment they know to be safe.

Sincerely,

Amy Patzlaff, Ed.D.
