Middle Schoolers Dive Into Literature That Inspires Learning and Growth
In middle school English classes, students have been enjoying some great literature. Sixth graders are reading Freak the Mighty, learning about using strength to help one another without judgment and how to build friendships. Seventh graders are immersing themselves in Treasure Island, a classic story about discovering hidden treasure and the hero's exciting adventure. Lastly, eighth graders are reading Chains, a historical fiction novel about the experiences of a slave girl set in New York during the American Revolution—a time period they are currently studying in social studies. These engaging books not only enhance students' reading skills but also teach valuable life lessons and deepen their understanding of history and humanity. Keep on reading, Cougars!

Achievements of the Byzantine Empire
Seventh graders went on a "Byzantine Empire Tour" during their social studies class. Working in pairs, students rotated among stations in their classroom to explore significant Byzantine sites such as the Hagia Sophia, the Hippodrome and other well-known places and events. They engaged with ancient music, answered questions and analyzed mosaics through puzzle assembly. What a way to "time-travel" and learn!

Making Connections Through Buddy Reading
The middle school students met the kindergarten and 1st grade students on the Randall Hall playground for the first buddy reading session of the year. Thank you to Mrs. Ward for curating a selection of fall-themed and Thanksgiving-themed picture books. Mostly, the middle schoolers read to their younger buddies, although there were some 1st grade students who were excited to be doing the reading!

Underwood Farm Adventure!
Kindergarteners enjoyed an exciting field trip to Underwood Farm, where they had the chance to explore a real working farm! They learned about different animals, how crops are grown, and even got to see farmers in action.
It was a fun and educational experience that brought classroom lessons to life and sparked their curiosity about the world around them. |
Inspiring Young Minds: "Storyteller of the Week" Brings Stories to Life
In the library, Mrs. Ward has begun the “Storyteller of the Week” program. This is a special program for our first grade students. Each week, one or two children are chosen and given a wordless picture book to take home. They come up with their own story to go with the book. The following week, these storytellers have an opportunity to sit in the special storyteller’s chair and tell their version of the story to their classmates.
This is an opportunity for the students to experience the joy of storytelling and is a treasured memory of many of our older students. |
Native American Heritage Month — Wilma Mankiller
November is Native American Heritage Month, a time to honor the contributions of Indigenous peoples to U.S. history and culture. Today, we highlight Wilma Mankiller, born on November 18, 1945, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, and the first woman elected principal chief of the Cherokee Nation.
She championed the rights of Native American and Alaska Native women and led innovative community projects empowering rural citizens. Wilma's name, Mankiller, symbolizes a guardian of the Cherokee people. As she once said, "Don’t let anyone else define you; define yourself." Her leadership and dedication continue to inspire!
