Clairbourn Insights

Students from 1st through 8th grade united in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month!

The 4th and 5th grade students performed a dance and sang a song in Spanish during Morning Assembly. In Spanish class, they have been practicing El Alfabeto en Español (The Alphabet in Spanish) by using four different modalities (seeing, hearing, speaking, and signing) as they practice to master the jingle. It is a fun way to learn El Alfabeto en Español!

Middle School Spanish classes also shared a collaborative art project they worked on earlier this month, paying tribute to many Hispanic-Americans who have significantly influenced the United States.
Take Lin-Manuel Miranda, for example. He was born in 1980 in Washington Heights, NYC, grew up loving musicals and wrote "In the Heights" in college, which later won a Tony Award for Best Musical. His groundbreaking hip-hop musical "Hamilton," telling the story of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, made a huge impact on theater.

Rita Moreno, the first Hispanic woman to win an Academy Award for her role as Anita in "West Side Story," was born in Puerto Rico and was on Broadway at 13. She achieved the rare feat of winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony, and Peabody Award. Truly in a league of her own is Ellen Ochoa, the first Hispanic American woman in space and the granddaughter of Mexican immigrants, earned a doctorate from Stanford, became an astronaut, and later became the first Hispanic director of Johnson Space Center.
These are just a few highlights of the people in their collaborative mural. As we continue the celebration of Hispanic Heritage month, we invite you to learn more about Hispanic people and their fascinating stories. No matter what area of interest you explore, we are sure that you will find Hispanic people whose work and talent have been influential in the United States.
A Special Community

Thank you for coming together last Friday to make the Family Social a tremendous success!

What a fantastic way to kick off the new school year, surrounded by joy, laughter, and the spirit of togetherness that defines Clairbourn. Seeing both old and new families come together reminds us of what makes Clairbourn so unique—our shared commitment to building and strengthening our sense of community. This event wasn’t just a fun afternoon; it was a celebration of the connections that make our school feel like a family.

Families enjoyed food, music, and fun activities that brought smiles to both children and parents. A big thank you to DJ Scott for keeping the energy high with great music, and to Solomon Siah and Chin Guok for leading the games and entertainment. The giant tug-of-war was a hit as always, and the water battle was a splash with the kids (and some parents). We hope there wasn’t too much water tracked into your cars! Even Captain Cougar made a special appearance.

Of course, this event would not have been possible without the incredible efforts of our volunteers. The Family Social Committee is immensely grateful for your time, energy, and dedication. A special thank you goes to: Connie Kim, Brian Chung, Ting Sung, Fiona Zhang, Eric Sasahara, Chin Guok, Jeanette Zamora, Carolyn Morales, Kevin Chow, Queenie Chen, Eddie Huang, Lydian Lin, Ronald Liu, Sabrina Chen, Albert Chen, Melissa Nijjar, Floy Shieh, Shirley Zhang, Che Wang, Ting Sung, Leidy Nijjar, Apryle Ferguson, Lucio Kim, Mastaneh Wazni, Siyi Zhao, AND the Facilities Team, led by Ryan Morehouse.

This event was a true reflection of what makes Clairbourn so special: the willingness of so many to give generously of their time to create experiences that strengthen our community. Thank you for helping make the Family Social an important tradition that reminds us all of the power of connection and belonging.

Here’s to a wonderful school year ahead!

With great appreciation,
Family Social Chairs
Solomon Siah, Scott Nguyen, and Michael Lee
