A Dot-tastic Time Being Creative and Learning!

Did you know that September 15 was International Dot Day, celebrated by millions of people around the world?
This day is inspired by The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds, a story about
a little girl who didn’t think she could draw. The book teaches
important lessons about bravery, creativity and self-belief.

JPK Bumblebees and PK Grasshoppers celebrated Dot Day with a fun learning unit focused on motor skills. They decorated posters, created dot-sticker and Do-a-Dot marker art, and even completed a dot-themed obstacle course. It was truly a dot-tastic time!

Our first graders also joined in the fun by using their creativity to design their own unique dot pictures. Their artwork now decorates the classroom walls, serving as a reminder to always believe in yourself and never give up!
September Drop Everything and Build

Middle school students were challenged to build the widest structure from paper, index cards, paper clips and 50 centimeters of tape.

The structure could only touch the table within an 8.5” by 11” base, and it could not dip below the plane of the table if it was wider than the table. The middle school
engineers used a variety of designs to support their structures, taking into consideration the strength of the supports and the optimal height. The arms of the structures also took on a variety of designs, with cylinders being a popular choice for their stability. In the end….

The runners-up in 7th grade were Austin and Ethan, and the widest structure in 7th grade was built by Warren and Victor. The runners-up in 8th grade were Matthew, Teddy and Bella, and the widest structure in 8th grade was built by Mary and Ruby.

Last but not least, the runners-up in 6th grade were Emma and Grace, with the widest structure in the whole middle school built by Xenia and Emily.

Well done, Cougar Engineers!

A Message from your Librarian, Mrs. Ward:

As part of our annual Clairbourn Book Fair, which is coming up the week of October 7-10, we have arranged for some amazing authors to come and speak with the students. You also have an opportunity to pre-order books by these authors. For books purchased through the Book Fair ONLY, the authors will autograph and personalize the books. There is a strict deadline, however, for these autographed copies. All pre-orders must be returned with payment by Thursday, September 26.

For the 4th-8th grade parents: please note that there are additional books available at this time. For those who have already ordered from the limited selection of titles for our Donuts and Discussion activity (thank you!), those books will be autographed as well.

Please have your student return these books to the library sometime between October 1-3. Our librarian Mrs. Ward will collect these for personalization by the author and return them during the Book Fair.

Note: only a very limited selection of these books will be available at the Book Fair, so please place these orders early.

Student Council leads the way
with a cultural presentation
for Hispanic Heritage Month!

Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to honor influential Hispanic Americans who have made significant contributions to our communities. Student Council introduced Emma Tenayuca at the Morning Assembly, a civil rights activist born in 1916 in San Antonio, Texas.

From a young age, her grandfather instilled in her a strong sense of Mexican identity, fueling her passion for social justice. By age 16, she organized for workers' rights and fearlessly spoke against discrimination, despite facing threats and jail time. She led the Pecan Shellers Strike, resulting in a significant wage increase for 12,000 workers and marking a major victory in the Mexican American fight for equality.

Although she faced backlash and removal from her leadership role, Tenayuca continued advocating for workers' rights, earning the support of the mayor and helping bring about lasting change for Mexican Americans. Through her courage and perseverance, Emma Tenayuca embodied the qualities of a true leader with heart.
