Eagles • Pi Day • CFA Meeting and more!

A lot is happening around the campus! Thank you to all the parents for enriching our community by attending the CFA meeting and volunteering!

Did you hear the exciting news? Big Bear's beloved bald eagle couple, Jackie and Shadow, recently welcomed three eaglets into the world! Our Kindergarteners joined a Zoom call with the Friends of Big Bear Valley to ask questions about Jackie and Shadow, learn about these incredible birds, and explore their nest. Click here to watch the nest camera.

Meanwhile, middle school students participated in a pi recitation contest in advance of Pi Day, coming up on Friday, 3/14. Twenty-one students chose to compete, impressively reciting digits from memory. Congratulations to our top four winners: 1st - Fiona T. (241 digits!), 2nd - Victor Z., 3rd - Ethan C., and 4th - Milton L. Enjoy your delicious pies!

Clairbourn Insights

Seventh graders utilized their knowledge about Japanese Medieval Samurai. As they worked together in groups of three, they researched weaponry, armor, the Bushido - the code that samurai follow to be honorable soldiers and citizens, and wrote their own haikus about the famous battles where the samurai defeated the Mongols. They also studied the social hierarchy of the period, connecting what they learned to a broader understanding of medieval Japan. What an engaging way to wrap up their social studies unit! We can't wait to see your final projects!

To deepen their understanding of Buddhism as part of their study of world religions in World History, both sixth and seventh graders toured the Hsi Lai Temple in Hacienda Heights. They enjoyed the beautiful grounds and Buddhist statues, learned from a knowledgeable guide, and even participated in a walking meditation. This hands-on experience brought their classroom learning to life in a meaningful way.

Celebrating the love of math and numbers!

Did you know pi is an irrational number that goes on infinitely without repeating? Did you know pi is a mathematical constant and is equal to the ratio of any circle's circumference to its diameter? And the first Pi Day was celebrated in San Francisco in 1988? And March 14 is also the birthday of Albert Einstein?

Billie Jean King: Champion On and Off the Court

Billie Jean King was born on November 22, 1943. She started playing tennis at age 11 and went on to win 39 Grand Slam titles, including a record 20 at Wimbledon.

Billie Jean King had her famous match against Bobby Riggs in 1973, where she proved women could compete equally with men, inspiring the fight for equal rights in sports. She helped form the Women’s Tennis Association and the Women’s Sports Foundation to support girls and women in sports. Although she has won many awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, she values the impact she’s had on others the most. Today, she continues to advocate for women in sports and recently helped launch the Professional Women’s Hockey League—all while rocking her signature colorful glasses.
