Songs of Ethics and Wisdom From Our Second Graders

Our second graders presented the musical play called Character Matters 2 last week. They sang songs, memorized lines and acted out the problems of fairy tale characters trying to make ethical choices. All students were featured in both of our 2B and 2G casts and put on six shows for students, parents and faculty!
It was impressive how well our students learned their parts, their entrances and exits and even managed their own backstage costume changes. There were so many special moments as our actors and singers displayed their talents: The three bears learned about forgiveness, Humpty Dumpty learned to take responsibility, and the magic mirrors (from the Snow White story) learned to have courage and be honest. (cast 2B video above)
Thank you to our second grade teachers Mrs. Robert and Mrs. Hung for working tirelessly with our students, our art teacher, Ms. Germonprez for helping the students create the backdrops, and the tremendous support from our parents! (cast 2G video on the right)

A Read Across America Celebration
Teddy Bear Picnic and Storytime Adventure
For Read Across America Week, third grade students visited preschool and read to our youngest Cougars from JPK and PK while enjoying a Teddy Bear Picnic. Preschoolers were invited to bring their favorite book and special stuffed animal from home. They have been following the third graders' journey on the Oregon Trail unit, so it was great to finally interact with them and see their costumes up close. It was wonderful to see excited, smiling faces as we made connections between the older and younger grades.

March is Women’s History Month, a time to celebrate the remarkable women who have shaped American society and culture.
This week, we recognize Helen Keller, born on June 27, 1880, in Tuscumbia, Alabama. A severe illness before her second birthday left her blind and deaf, and she did not receive proper education until age seven. That changed when she met her mentor, Anne Sullivan, who taught her Braille and lip reading. Keller later attended Radcliffe College, where she published The Story of My Life and Optimism, launching her writing career.
Beyond writing, she became a passionate advocate for people with disabilities, a pacifist during World War I, and a co-founder of the American Civil Liberties Union and the American Foundation for the Blind. Even after Sullivan’s passing, Keller continued lecturing worldwide on blindness and women’s suffrage. Her resilience and dedication made her one of the most admired women in history, inspiring films about her life. Helen Keller passed away on June 1, 1968, but her legacy as a scholar, leader, and advocate lives on.

Spring is just around the corner, so it was a perfect time to enjoy some buddy reading in the beautiful sunshine. During their Advisory class, the middle school students took a trip to Randall Hall to read picture books about spring with the kindergarten and first grade students. Thank you to Mrs. Ward for curating a great selection of stories to enjoy!

Pioneer Journey Update
Third grade has begun their journey out west on the Oregon Trail! Not only do they learn about the journey traveled, but they also learn the ways of pioneer life. Working in family groups, students have taken on a pioneer persona (including a new name) and each day join other families in a wagon train to move across the country. On their way they encounter many beautiful landmarks, but also challenges such as river crossings.
When they're not moving their wagons along the trail, they're sewing, square dancing and learning how to churn butter. They are also managing quite well with the limited food options, with many of them realizing they quite like beans! We can't wait to hear about the rest of their pioneer journey!
