Who is Ready?
See you at the Royal Battle on 2/10!
Battle of the Books is a reading challenge for students from second to eighth grade. It is a national program adapted by our Librarian Mrs. Ward for Clairbourn. Each team of three to four students from grades two to five has been challenged to read a total of eight books together as a team. In grades six to eight, each team (one advisory class per team) has been challenged to work together to read a total of six books. Teams will answer questions in a quiz show format until there is one winning team left for each of the second, third, fourth and fifth grades, as well as one winning middle school team. The royal battle will take place on Monday, February 10.
It will be a lot of fun for both students and observers! Parents are welcome to quietly observe the competition. Winning teams will be presented the following day, at Morning Assembly on Tuesday, February 11. Here is the schedule!

January Drop Everything and Build
Zipline Challenge!
For the first Drop Everything & Build of 2025, the middle school students were challenged to build a device that could travel the farthest along a zipline that was strung across the science classroom. This was a challenging build, with the engineers needing to reduce friction as much as possible, keep their devices balanced, and ensure there was enough weight for gravity to pull the devices down the zipline.
In the sixth grade, the runners-up were Aiden and Kaitlin, and the most successful zipline device was built by Bill and Mila. In the seventh grade, the runners-up were Warren and Mark, and the device that went the farthest was built by Alex and Hins. In the eighth grade, the runners-up were Malena and Lennon, and the most successful zipline device in the entire middle school was built by eighth graders Darren and Fiona.

February is Black History Month
To honor Black Americans’ contributions to society, we begin with Barack Obama.
Born on August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii, Obama spent his childhood there before attending Occidental College, Columbia University, and Harvard Law School.
He worked as a writer, editor, community organizer, constitutional law lecturer, and civil rights attorney before serving in the Illinois Senate and later as a U.S. senator. In 2008, he was elected as the 44th and first African American president, winning re-election in 2012.
As president, Obama expanded healthcare access, created job opportunities, and addressed neglected areas. He won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize for advancing diplomacy and cooperation. In 2010, he signed the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, funding school nutrition programs.
After his presidency, Obama wrote a memoir and continues supporting communities through initiatives like job training in Chicago, showing he is a scholar and leader with heart.

National Periodic Table Day
While National Periodic Table Day might not be the most obvious February holiday, it too has some chemistry — but it’s the kind you find in a lab! National Periodic Table Day recognizes the publication of the first table of elements. Here are some facts to spark your curiosity as we celebrate this scientific day on February 7.
• Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev was the first to arrange elements in the structure we know as the periodic table.
• Elements found on Earth and Mars are exactly the same.
• There are about 94 elements on the periodic table that occur in nature. All of the other elements are man-made.
