Next Week is Standardized Testing
We will be administering ERB tests for second through eighth grade from Monday, 2/3 through Friday, 2/7. Students should get a good night's sleep, eat a nutritious breakfast, and be on time. Go, Cougars! |
Battle of Books is BACK!
Who is ready?! Mark 2/10 on your calendar.
Battle of the Books is a reading challenge for students from second to eighth grade. It is a national program revised for Clairbourn. Each team of three to four students from grades two to five has been challenged to read a total of eight books together as a team. In grades six to eight, each team (one advisory class per team) has been challenged to work together to read a total of six books. Teams will answer questions in a quiz show format until there is one winning team left for each of the second, third, fourth and fifth grades, as well as one winning middle school team. The royal battle will take place on Monday, February 10.
It will be a lot of fun for both students and observers! Parents are welcome to quietly observe the competition. Winning teams will be presented the following day, at Morning Assembly on Tuesday, February 11. Here is the schedule!

STEM projects that illuminate the campus and beyond.

Kindergarten through second grade students enjoyed learning the mechanics of crafting paper lanterns, transforming a rectangular 2D object into a round 3D creation in the Innovation Lab. They were challenged to use critical thinking skills while fine-tuning their motor skills. Taking it to the next level, the concept of electricity was introduced, giving students an opportunity to explore the intricacies of applying lights to their lanterns. They learned about the flow of electrons, the difference between conductive and insulated materials, and the components of a circuit. Many students used wire strippers for the first time. These handcrafted creations symbolize hope and bring added festivity to the campus during Lunar New Year celebrations this week!
Meanwhile, older students from fourth through eighth grade have been working on creating Corsi-Rosenthal Boxes (an efficient air purifier made from simple materials) to donate to those impacted by the fires. They have completed over 18 boxes. Partnering with CFA, we are donating some of the Corsi-Rosenthal Boxes to Door of Hope. We are proud of the effort of our Clairbourn community!

Clairbourn Life
Each of you makes a difference
We are proud of our Cougars for being scholars and leaders with heart. Thank you for recognizing our community heroes! The firefighters greatly appreciated our students' thoughtful hand-made posters. We also want to thank everyone who showed up last Thursday to support our fourth graders' service learning project, which raised money for the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation and the American Red Cross.

Picasso, Jackson Pollock and More!
Student artwork is on display in the Admin Building. The artwork includes first grade abstract portraits inspired by Picasso in his cubism style. They used both soft and oil pastels to create their works of art and thus it was a multimedia project. Another display features fifth grade acrylic paintings inspired by Jackson Pollock who created this style of painting in which the paint is dripped and flung onto the canvas instead of actually touching a paintbrush to the paper. Jackson Pollock used many tools besides paintbrushes and so did we! We used squeeze bottles, spoons, and dried paint brushes.

First Graders Shine as Storytellers
Sharing Imaginative Tales in a Beloved Library Tradition
We love watching our first graders unleash the magic of storytelling in the library for their "Storyteller of the Week" program. They read their own stories inspired by wordless picture books and share their imaginative tales with their classmates while seated in the special storyteller's chair! This tradition is a treasured memory for many of our older students!

Students Grow in Rhythm, Pitch, and Theory!
In our rich music program, students of all ages explore the wonderful world of sound. Our youngest learners explore rhythm and pitch with singing and percussion instruments, while lower school students learn to play melodies and harmonies and put them together, and third graders strum their way through the basics of music with the baritone ukulele. Building upon their skills, older students elevate their musical foundation through dynamic percussion and band ensembles.
Our intermediate and advanced band members from fourth to eighth grades enjoy rehearsing and learning new pieces together! At Clairbourn, students learn not only the practical side of music but also the theory behind it.

Supporting Door of Hope
Clairbourn has a long tradition of supporting Door of Hope, which helps families experiencing homelessness. Door of Hope’s CEO, Reverend Megan Katerjian, and three team members lost their homes in the Eaton Fire. Despite such a devastating loss, Door of Hope has continued to assist low-income families impacted by the Eaton Fire.
The Eaton Fire Housing Assistance Program provides: Transitional Housing for up to 8 families in 2025. As current residents of Door of Hope’s Pasadena shelters transition into permanent housing, Door of Hope will dedicate vacant units to fire victims.
Housing Assistance & Disaster Case Management for up to 50 families. This brand new service will come alongside very low-income families who have lost their home in the fire and provide disaster case management and housing assistance.
Please consider making a gift to support Door of Hope’s Eaton Fire Housing Assistance Program. Any questions, please contact Fire Relief Outreach Chair - Heather Jones. |
