So Much to be Grateful For!

Dear Clairbourn Families,

As we approach Thanksgiving, I am touched by the gratitude project we have been doing with the students. They have so much on their gratitude lists and so do I! I am grateful for our amazing teachers, our beautiful campus, our dedicated maintenance workers, the reliable office staff and the devoted administration. I am grateful for our parent community, filled with volunteers, creative leaders and generous supporters. I am especially grateful for our hard-working, thoughtful, kind and creative students who are Scholars and Leaders with Heart. I am grateful each day for the opportunity to work in such a wonderful environment filled with inspiring people.

Thank you for being such an important part of the Clairbourn Family. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your families!

Clairbourn Insights

The fourth grade students investigated how differences in lava types explain differences in the shape and eruption patterns among volcanoes. In the experiment, Bubble Trouble, students compared two different types of lava. A thin lava made from only water and a thick lava made from flour, water and red food coloring. They used this information to figure out why volcanoes have different shapes and to understand how the type of lava explains why some volcanoes explode.
Clairbourn Students Show HEART!

In honor of the Veterans Day, our preschool students have been learning about American flags, what it means to have 13 stripes and 50 stars. They discussed colors, sang patriotic songs, talked about what a flag means and even participated in a parade! What a way to show your patriotic spirit, Cougars!

Socktober was a Success!

Thank you for contributing to the sock shortage and making a difference in the lives of families in need at Hillsides and Elizabeth House. Hillsides provides home-based family care to help youth heal from the effects of trauma and Elizabeth House is a non profit organization that supports and empowers pregnant and parenting women in need.

In total, we donated a whopping 559 pairs of socks or 1118 socks to Elizabeth House and Hillsides! We have shown that a small act of love can be multiplied a thousandfold and make a big difference in the lives of people in our community who are experiencing homelessness. Thank you to everyone who supported Socktober!

Clairbourn Honors Veterans

Student Council delivered hand-made cards for the veterans who live across the street in the Ivy Park assisted living home in San Marino. The veterans served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. They were delighted to receive the messages and gratitude from Clairbourn students.
Let the Creativity Flow

Inspiration in Each Stroke and Hue

Students from third grade experimented with printmaking techniques! They used foam to carve designs with pencils, colored the foam with markers, added water to their papers, which allowed the marker to transfer to the paper from their foam 'stamps,' and voila! They had prints! Their final touches were the abstract background using different color shapes and line designs with crayon and marker.

Fourth graders learned about one-point perspective, where everything in the artwork converges to a single point on the paper. They used liquid glue to create raised barriers and soft pastels to fill the spaces. Students employed rulers to align the edges of their letters with the perspective on the paper, creating a 3D effect. They also explored the significance of colors; if a letter matched its background color, it would not pop, but instead blend, thus diminishing the 3D effect.

In first grade, students created mandala-inspired flowers with a recycling element. They learned how to craft complex designs through layering. By forming shapes resembling flower petals and adding new shapes in between each set, they developed flowers throughout the entire center. After cutting out the flowers, they utilized the remaining paper to draw flower stems, leaves and grass. Throughout the lesson, students worked with a variety of materials, including oil pastels, watercolor paint, scissors and glue. The process was complex and involved many steps, but they did a fantastic job.

We love our student artwork!

Clairbourn Gift Policy

Gratitude is always welcome, but a gift is never necessary. A kind note, a genuine thank you or a word of gratitude is always meaningful. Clairbourn has a stated gift policy for all employees:

• Employees may only accept gifts and/or gift cards that have a value of $100 or less.

• Employees may accept a gift and/or gift card of over $100 only if it is a collective gift and each individual’s contribution is $100 or less (i.e. the scrip gift at the holidays and end of the year).

Please help us by following this policy. If you feel you must do more than the note or word of thanks, please consider contributing to the group scrip gifts at the holidays and at the end of the year. Please do not put any employees in an awkward situation by ignoring the policy. If an employee receives something of higher value, it must be returned or will be donated to the school.

Thank you for helping us create an inclusive environment!

Learning Through Literature and Applying to Better Ourselves!

At school, we learn many stories through different literature. From the fairytales of kindergarten, to Charlotte’s Web in 3rd grade, to The Outsiders in 8th grade, to acting out the Winnie the Pooh play. We share stories because they help us better understand ourselves and each other.

This week at Morning Assembly, we are discovering how each of us has our own story. Students are encouraged to be the best characters possible by showing good character traits like Harry Potter. We are reminded that with a little imagination and a lot of love, we can create a world as wonderful as any storybook land like in Narnia. Just like The Three Little Pigs, we can make choices that reflect our values and morality. Most importantly, we can see conflicts as opportunities to grow like Alice from Alice in Wonderland.

Every story features characters, setting, plot,
conflict and theme. You are the author of your story. Make it a good one!

Holiday Giving: Children Helping Children

Here is a list of charities for you to consider supporting as we approach the holiday season. Clairbourn students are Scholars and Leaders with Heart, so let’s show some HEART by helping those less fortunate than we are. If you choose to support one of the attached charities, please try to mention Clairbourn in your donations or purchases. Support is completely voluntary, but much appreciated. Please contact Heather Jones, Holiday Gift Giving Chair, with any questions.

Skirball Adventure

The fifth grade class had an enlightening visit to the Skirball Museum, where they embarked on an immersive journey through the immigrant experience in their quest for a new life in America. Our students gained insights and deepened their understanding of historical life and culture through the educational resources at Skirball.

Native American Heritage Month

Student Council prepared an educational presentation to celebrate Native American Heritage Month. Learn more about the iconic figures presented: Cheri Madsen & Allan Houser
