Clairbourn Insights

Fifth grade students explored resin casting and molding for the first time in their I-Lab class! Mr. Beaber demonstrated how the two different bottles start as a liquid. When mixed in equal portions, they generated an exothermic reaction giving off a lot of heat and turning the liquids into a solid in just five minutes. The class was also practicing proper safety precautions with the materials like how to put on and take off gloves as well as what the gloves do and don't protect them from. In the coming classes students will be creating their own molds that they can use to create different shaped candies, chocolates, soap, candles and more.
Critical Thinking Skills

The eighth graders enriched their learning by engaging in higher level thinking in social studies class. After discussing Columbus's trip to the New World, the class was put into groups and participated in a mock trial of Columbus, his men, the king and queen of Spain and the system of rule. They tackled questions about who was responsible for war crimes, crimes against humanity, crimes against the environment, genocide and the theft of Native American land. It was an action-filled, thought provoking activity with lots of learning!
Hands-On Learning with an Engineering Mind

Second Graders Build Bird Feeders for Science Project

Last week the second grade did an engineering project as part of their animal unit in science. After learning about how different birds prefer to eat at different kinds of bird feeders, our second grade engineers designed prototypes that would make a good bird feeder for a finch, jay, woodpecker or cardinal. They planned ways to keep the birds who visited their bird feeder safe from predators (in this case, cats). Prototypes were built with simple and inexpensive materials that are easy to cut, fold and bend. The students displayed great focus and creativity during this project. Every prototype was a little bit different!
2023 Entrepreneurial Fair

Eighth Clairbourn Entrepreneurial Fair on Friday, October 27 at 3:15 p.m.

Calling all young Clairbourn entrepreneurs! Launch your own startup business and join us at the 8th Annual Clairbourn School's Entrepreneurial Fair. We want to invite friends and family to support our entrepreneurs in their venture. So even if your kids don't have a booth, please join to shop, share and have fun at the fair too! Through this process, our children develop a brand, create a unique product or service, build a marketing strategy and open for customers at our one-day marketplace. Last year's fair was a huge success and we hosted over 50 booths at the event. The fair will be held at the athletic filed at Clairbourn School on October 27 from 3:15 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

We have saved the most important documents including the application, F.A.Q.'s, guidelines and other useful documents online and available via this link. We encourage everyone to participate. Applications are available until October 23, but we encourage students to register early. To cover costs for the event, there is a small booth fee of $40 which includes a table, table cover, two chairs and a pop-up canopy. All applications are accepted if it falls within the guidelines (see the document online). Here is the link to book your booth. Secure your spot at the fair soon!

Honoring Julia de Burgos

Puerto Rican Poetry Pioneer

As we continue to hear inspiring stories from Hispanic Heritage month, this week Student Council introduced a poet from Puerto Rico named Julia de Burgos. She was a literary foremother of the Nuyorican movement, defied societal norms and advocated for the island's independence. Julia de Burgos's poetry explored issues like Puerto Rico's colonial past, the legacy of slavery and American imperialism.
