Happy 200th eCourier!

Did you know before our weekly school newsletter became the eCourier, it was a paper version called the Cougar Courier for almost 20 years?

Taking the Cougar Courier home on Thursday was a weekly assignment of our students. It was placed in a gold vinyl pouch which students had to return every Friday. In 2020, the electronic eCourier started its current format! Happy 200th eCourier issue!!

Clairbourn Insights

Middle School Algebra students deepened their understanding of the parts of a linear equation by dropping marbles into a graduated cylinder filled with water and recording data. They observed how the amount of water changed based on how many marbles they dropped in. Students learned the slope is the rate of change, wrote linear equations to represent the quantity of water as dependent on the number of marbles, graphed the line, and thought critically about slope and y-intercept!
Hispanic Heritage Celebration

Thank you to our devoted and passionate parents for helping us honor the cultural diversity within our community! Last week we kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month with a celebration that embraced this unity! It's a great reminder that our differences enrich our experiences here at Clairbourn!

In addition to our parents' contribution, the middle school students were hard at work researching and preparing presentation boards depicting Latin American Countries where the Spanish language is spoken. Led by Spanish teacher Señora Rubio, students did a great job presenting their findings through the colorful, informative displays and oral presentations in Spanish class.
Middle School English

Middle schoolers engage in a diverse reading journey!

For quarter one, eighth grade students are diving into The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, a classic novel that examines the bonds of friendship and rivalry among a group of teenage friends from different socioeconomic backgrounds. The story explores the negative effects of a divided community and stereotypes and the power of empathy as a response to that impact.

Seventh graders are embarking on an emotional adventure with Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech, a heartwarming tale that explores the complexities of friendship and self-discovery, the theme of empathy as a source of understanding and the role of stories in the human experience.

In sixth grade, students are exploring the historical novel Number the Stars by Lois Lowry, which delves into themes of courage and resistance during World War II. As part of their novel study, six graders spoke with Ethan Paikowsky, a person of Jewish heritage. What made the experience even more special was the opportunity to have this conversation on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish faith. The students got to ask Mr. Paikowsky questions about his perspective on the book; his knowledge of the Holocaust, particularly regarding The March of the Living, during which he traveled to Europe to study the Holocaust with other Jewish teens and Holocaust survivors; and his lived experience as a Jewish person today in the United States.

These three novels not only provide students with captivating stories but also offer valuable lessons on Clairbourn's Code of Ethics - honesty, respect, responsibility, spirituality and citizenship!
A Journey Through Roman History

Middle School students from seventh and eighth grades visited the Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades, to learn about Roman history and culture. They explored Roman artifacts, admired sculptures, pottery, and jewelry, and experienced the Villa's Roman-inspired architecture and gardens, making history come to life in an engaging way!
We are Clairbourn!

Thank you to the entire Clairbourn community for gathering last Friday at the Family Social!

You helped make this inaugural event a tremendous success in kicking off this school year. We saw a lot of laughter and joy in our children, but the same can be said for all the parents and families. Old and new families sharing pleasant conversations over good food, joyful music and fun games brought the community together.

Families enjoyed tasty hamburgers, hot dogs, fries and shaved ice. Musical sounds were provided by Clairbourn dad, DJ Scott Nguyen. Fun games and entertainment were refereed by Clairbourn dads, Solomon Siah and Scott Smith. Tug-of-War supplied the best entertainment in seeing young children defeat their parents. We even saw a cameo from Captain Cougar. We look forward to an amazing year and wish all of you at Clairbourn great success! Family Social dads could not have planned and executed such a joyous event without the strength and support of our entire Clairbourn Family. The following parents made this event a successful family affair!

We would love to give MANY THANKS to: Dana Wong, Brian Chung, Ting Sung, Connie Kim, Apryle Ferguson, Fiona Zhang, Claire Chen, John Liu, Jeanette Zamora, Tina Keshishian, Carolyn Morales, Luke Ball, Bhart Manwani, Scott Smith, Linh Banh, Michael Lee, Lino Jubilado, Jason Chien, Claudia Bodan, Jason Sung, Alice Sung, Kevin McKee, Apple McKee, Lucio Kim, Alfonso Ruiz, Tom Pile, Sabrina Chen, Liuqin Ni, Miranda Juan, Jing Chen, Che Wang, Matt McPherson, Jun Peng, Joe Carnahan, Sabraj Nijjar, Melissa Nijjar & Ryan Morehouse with the facilities team.

Seek Clarity • Express Ourselves with Honesty • Embrace Curiosity

As we continue to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, students heard about how Jaime Escalante, known for his dedication, determination and empowering others, left an indelible mark on the world of education. One of his most notable achievements was his success in teaching Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus to students from predominantly low-income, minority backgrounds. He didn't just teach math; he inspired his students to believe in themselves and their potential.
