International Dot Day
Always believe in yourself and never give up
September 15 is International Dot Day and is celebrated all over the world by millions of people! International Dot Day is inspired by the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. The book is about a little girl who did not think she could draw and the story teaches us about being brave, creative and believing in yourself!
Our first graders participated in an International Dot Day activity by using their creativity and making their own dot designs and pictures. The artwork is hanging on the classroom walls as a reminder to always believe in yourself and never give up! |

Clairbourn Insights
If you have an opportunity to visit the Nafie Building, please check out the wonderful artwork made by our students! The fifth grade class displayed their abstract blind contour drawings. The students sat across from a classmate and were asked not to take their eyes off of them while producing this drawing. It was created with one continuous line in three minutes. Lastly, the kindergarteners shared their watercolor paintings. They learned what watercolor is and painted the earth in the center of the paper with rays of color coming from it.
Second graders proudly presented their weaving project. They watched a National Geographic video beforehand on indigenous Guatemalan people weaving in modern times and learned how yarn and big tapestries/ rugs are made with a loom. Students then learned how to set up weaving boards and switched between different colors of yarn to create a mini rug.

September Drop Everything and Build
For the first Drop Everything and Build of the year, the middle school students were challenged to build a swing out of a strawberry basket. Using straws, paper clips, clothespins, rubber bands, thread and masking tape, students worked in teams of two or three to build swings that could hold the most weight. Our Cougars showed their engineering skills as they built, tested and made adjustments.
Results: In the 6th grade, the runners-up were Eric G. and Elliot C., and the winners were Hins F. and Wan-Tao Li. In the 7th grade, the runners-up were Jerry Z. and Sima S., and the winners were Fiona T. and Lennon C. In the 8th grade, there were two teams of runners-up: Vicky S. and Asal E., and Valen S. and Jerry C. The overall winners were Arthur B. and Joseph A. Well done, Cougar Engineers!

Inspiration: Critical Qualities for Success
This week's Morning Assembly messages shared the critical qualities for success! Students heard about the importance of optimism, tenacity, enthusiasm and diligence and were encouraged to demonstrate these qualities of success.
Tenacity is my superpower!
Louis Pasteur, the 19th century French chemist and microbiologist, is famous for his discoveries of the principles of vaccination, fermentation and pasteurization, as well as for his research in chemistry which led to breakthroughs in understanding the causes and prevention of many diseases. He said, “Let me tell you the secret that has led me to my goal. My strength lies solely in my tenacity.”
Be Diligent like Arthur Ashe!
Arthur Ashe was the number one tennis player in the world during much of the 1960’s and 1970’s. He was the first black player selected to the U.S. Davis Cup team and the first black person ever to win the singles titles at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, and the Australian Open. He shared, “An important key to success is self-confidence and the key to self-confidence is preparation.”
Cougars, let us have tenacity as our superpower and grow into Scholars and Leaders with Heart!
