Thank you for celebrating community with us! JPK to fifth grade students showed us what they have learned in music classes. Besides learning how to read and write music, students learned how to play rhythms, use new instruments and apply the solfege method! Special thank you to our middle school band musicians for sharing your talent! At Clairbourn, we find countless opportunities to grow. Through music, we inspire and motivate creativity. We teach children to embrace challenges with positivity.

Special thank you to Ms. Kiertzner and Mr. Elmore for a great show, the administration for your support, to JPK through fifth grade teachers for your assistance and patience, and to the maintenance crew for your hard work and clever ideas!

Cross-Curricular Service Learning Project

Kindergarten Cross-Curricular Service Learning Project

Our kindergarten classes finished a can and plastic bottle drive as their service learning project to help the Los Angeles Beekeepers Association. They raised close to $125 in cans and bottles to help with honey bee research and education. This unique service learning project not only taught the students how to care for our environment, but also challenged their math, science and art skills! From creating posters, collection boxes and learning about the importance of bees, to collecting and counting plastic bottles, our Cougars did a great job involving the whole community.

The kindergarteners enjoyed meeting the representatives from the Los Angeles Beekeepers Association. They were most excited to observe the beehive and see the smoker. They even got to see the queen laying her eggs! Next time when you see a kindergartener, ask them what a beehive smells like!

Mary Landau, a retired school teacher, used pictures and a paper mache bee she had made to teach many interesting facts about bees. She also showed the
kindergarteners how bees collect and process pollen. Students had fun pretending to be bees while mimicking their pollen collection process!

Beekeeper Charlene and her traveling beehive also shared some interesting facts. Did you know that to make a wild bee hive tame, the beekeeper switches out the queen bee with a new Italian queen bee. Eventually, the hive will become tame. Students saw Charlene’s bee suit and tool to open her hives and witnessed the queen bee laying eggs! She went from one cell to the next! Everyone received a honey stick to enjoy and a craft to do at the end. What an unforgettable learning experience!

Did you know?
Bees have five eyes. Male bees do not sting and have bigger eyes. If you blow your breath on the bees, they became agitated and get louder and move faster. This is because it makes them think that there is a predator nearby and they need to flee!
Clairbourn Families Association (CFA)

Thank you to everyone who came out to support our Spring Carnival this year!

Dear Clairbourn Families,
What an incredible journey we've had! The recent Clairbourn Carnival was not just a gathering; it was an event that will be etched in our memories for years to come. With
joyous laughter, dazzling smiles, and an overwhelming sense of camaraderie, our school community came together to create magic.

This year's Carnival was a testament to the unwavering spirit and dedication of our community. The heartwarming reward of witnessing the children's joy, hearing their laughter, and seeing the beaming faces of our parents reaffirms why we are so fortunate to be part of the Clairbourn family.

It's time for... Expert Thursday!

Second graders have been developing their public speaking skills during the Expert Thursday project.

Each Thursday students present on topics that they are experts about. The presentation topics have included cooking, baseball, violin, martial art, dogs, and much more. After each presentation, the expert takes questions from the class. It is wonderful to see these young students develop their confidence for speaking before a group.

Cougar Pride on Golf Courses!

The boys and girls golf teams enjoyed a great day out on the course. We had seven students representing the Cougars and had the opportunity to play in a foursome with other golfers from various private schools in the area.

Our athletes were able to hit some good shots out there! Thank you for representing Clairbourn with Cougar pride!

Field Trip Highlights

Discover the
Wonders of Nature!

First-grade students visited Descanso Gardens for a field trip this week. They learned about plants, engaged in hands-on activities and discovered fun facts about animals. We loved hearing all the feedback they shared at Morning Assembly.

Second Grade
Visited LA Arboretum!

Clairbourn second grade students went on a hands-on, interactive journey at the LA Arboretum. They took a closer look at the incredible natural systems at work through the lens of different themes, including Habitat, Pollination, Plant Adaptation, Ethnobotany and Biodiversity.

Our students were delighted to share what they learned at the Morning Assembly! What a unique opportunity for collective learning and dynamic peer exchange! Well done, Cougars!

Come see what's growing in the garden!

Mrs. Gier, Dr. Ryan and the fifth grade class replenished the garden outside of the 5th grade classroom. Every student participated in each activity - adding new soil, compost and soil enrichment materials, using their hands to mix it all together.

Many different kinds of plants were planted including the "three sister" plants of corn, beans and squash. Students learned that the Native Americans planted the three sister plants because they nurture each other like family when planted together.

This is our hope not only for the garden but for our students. It was a delightful way to spend time together - one student remarked, "this is better than recess!"
