Clairbourn Highlights

Third grade is happy to report the pioneers successfully completed their Oregon Trail journey. They crossed the Platte River, were amazed at the height of Chimney Rock and learned how to churn butter on the trail. Our pioneers
even made it to Independence Rock in time to celebrate Independence Day. Upon their arrival in Oregon City, cheers filled the air as they they tossed their hats and bonnets in celebration of their remarkable achievement!

A couple of our pioneers had some trouble crossing the Snake River, but luckily all of the families worked together and they finally got everyone safely across. They traveled about 1,600 miles and everyone enjoyed their new lives in the “Land of Milk and Honey.”

YEE HAW!

Your trail bosses,
Lucy Miller (aka Mrs. Smith) & Jasper (aka Mr. Berglund)

Costa Rica Adventures

Making Memories and Creating Connections

The Costa Rica trip was back in full swing during Spring Break 2024! This optional school trip began in the early 2000s and continued until the pandemic. Our last trip was in 2019, and we were able to take the trip again this year with eleven middle school students and two faculty chaperones for a 13-day trip full of adventure, fun and good times with friends!

The Clairbourn travelers were able to mingle with Costa Ricans, learn about the culture, talk about Costa Rican life with their local guide, eat authentic Costa Rican food, practice Spanish and participate in many adventurous outdoor activities, such as a two-day white water rafting excursion on the Pacuare River. They also ziplined through the jungle with the monkeys and enjoyed views of rivers, volcanoes and waterfalls. Everyone swam around and under several waterfalls!

The group braved a Tarzan Swing that catapulted them on a big swing high into the trees. They went horseback riding with amazing views of Arenal Volcano and got wet as they rode through the river. One highlight was to learn about the process of making chocolate from the cacao fruit. They tasted chocolate throughout the process, from sucking the fruit off the cacoa seeds to making hot chocolate and adding sugar, milk, vanilla and cinnamon.

The students rappelled down waterfalls, hiked through the rainforest, and saw howler monkeys, spider monkeys, two-toed and three-toed sloths, blue jean frogs, poison dart frogs, alligators, iguanas, toucans, scarlet macaws and snakes! They ended the trip at the beach with a boat ride to Isla Tortuga for snorkeling and a banana boat ride. Their trek home was a long one, but everyone was so grateful for this amazing opportunity!
2024 Spring Carnival

Spring Carnival will be held on April 27 from 11:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. after the Spring Concert.

Enjoy the yummy food, foam party, bumper cars, swing ride, ferris wheel, giant slide and more. The best part is the return of CARNIVAL games! Plenty of smiles guaranteed! Tickets, pre-order food, sponsorship opportunities and more information to come! If you would like to get involved and support this amazing event, please click here to volunteer at the carnival.
Learning Through Experimenting

Our first graders studied animal adaptations and how animals survive in different climates. Students learned how whales use their blubber to survive the cold. They experienced this by putting their hands in buckets of ice cold water! One hand was protected by the "blubber" which was Crisco shortening, while the other hand was not. Students quickly realized the hand protected by the "blubber" was warm and the hand not protected by the "blubber" was freezing. Keep on staying curious, Cougars!
Unlocking Liberty

How many times has the constitution been amended? Not sure? Ask an eighth grader!

In social studies class, eighth graders used their impressive knowledge of the U.S. constitution, the colonies, articles of confederation and more to create a board game. With a partner, they designed their game board, markers, question cards, spinner and rule book. They played the games and tested each other's knowledge while also having fun!
2024 Eclipse Watching

Students along with the faculty and staff observed the eclipse at 11:00 a.m. on Monday April 8 when California had the most visibility. The middle school made pinhole projectors and shared them with third graders. The returning Costa Rica students experienced the eclipse during their layover in Dallas, Texas. They experienced totality when the whole sky turned dark and become light again when the eclipse passed. Even though they couldn't see it inside the airport, it was certainly exciting to experience it!

PK Field Trip to Trader Joe's

Over the next month, PK is learning about different community helpers.

They walked to Trader Joe's to learn about all the different jobs and the different areas of the store in which helpers work. Students learned about the following areas: produce, vegetables, dairy, chips, freezer and flowers. They even got to scan a box of cereal, go inside a large freezer, and see a large compactor crush their boxes.

Thank you Trader Joe's for helping us learn about the community helpers at a supermarket.
