2024 Engineering Week
From Ideation to Voltage: Wind Turbines Designed by K-8 Students
Students in kindergarten to eighth grade embarked on the full Human Centered Design (HCD) approach from the Stanford University (d.school) and IDEO to design windsocks, anemometers and wind turbines to harness the kinetic energy of the wind and convert it into electricity. We began by learning how to assemble the turbine base out of PVC pipes, followed by cutting, stripping and electrical taping motors wires and alligator clips threaded inside the pipe bases.
Next we brainstormed, or ideated as it's called in HCD, Students drew plans and listed options for different variables including the material, length, width, angle and number of blades for their wind turbines. We researched what made turbines successful and learned some modern wind turbines use biomimicry to borrow from the serrated feathers of owls to reduce noise and increase output. With thousands of options, we narrowed the list down to the ones we had the materials for and, based on our research, thought would give us the best chance of success.
Students constructed hundreds of prototypes across the school and began testing them using multimeters to measure the amount of voltage their turbines generated when the wind blew via either a house fan or the Santa Ana winds. On average each turbine was able to generate around 0.15 volts. With 50 turbines in the school we could generate the same push as 5 AA batteries using just the wind!
Our engineers persevered through struggles learning each setback made their final product that much better on their way to their completed wind turbines. It was wonderful to see the students problem solve, identify what wasn't working or what they wanted to improve and had the agency to fix it themselves. Special thanks to our I Lab teacher, Mr. Beaber for leading this year's Engineering week and for all of his patience working with many students!

Connecting Hearts Through Shared Stories
In our buddy reading program, enthusiastic third graders took on the role of mentors for our youngest learners in JPK. It's so great seeing our lower school students share their love for reading as they flipped through tales of adventure and wonder. Clairbourn connections formed as they shared giggles and fascination in our inviting learning environment! |

Whimsical World of Leprechauns in Preschool!
Our youngest learners in JPK enjoyed the whimsical world of leprechauns and rainbows. From crafting charming leprechaun traps and binoculars to creating vibrant collages, their creativity was seen everywhere in the classroom and the preschool yard.
Throughout the week, their excitement grew as they adorned their traps with stickers, rainbows, slides and ladders, eagerly anticipating the mischief of leprechauns. They enjoyed an engaging St. Patrick's Day hunt and indulged in rainbow jello treats, courtesy of room parents Leidy and Alice!

Q3 Sports Awards
Recognizing the hard work and dedication of our talented athletes!
For this track and field season, both A and B track teams demonstrated heart in the running events and strength in the field events. Each athlete continually pushed their limits with many achieving personal bests.
Our highlights from track meets this season include Bella's first and second place in the shot put, Simon's performance with first and second place in the 100-
meter sprint along with a first and second in the high jump, and his second place in the long jump. Austin secured first place in the 70-yard dash and a second place in the high jump. Additionally, Wan-Tao earned two third place awards in the 800 meter race, one of which was competing against older athletes on the A team.
Congratulations to the following athletes this season: On the girls A team, coaches' award goes to Christina and MVP to Bella. On the girls B team, MVP goes to Wan-Tao. Boys MVP awards go to Simon from the A team and Austin from the B team.
We are proud of all of our Cougars for their willingness to try new events with a positive attitude and to constantly work toward new goals!

Being able to go on field trips is a highlight of a Clairbourn education!
Recently, our sixth graders explored Hinduism and Buddhism at the Norton Simon Museum, impressing the docents with their understanding of symbolism and religious concepts. Meanwhile, our first graders went on an adventure to the LA Zoo, showcasing their wide range of knowledge of animals and ecosystems to the delight of the guides.
Over the past few weeks, students from third grade have been enjoying the enchanting world of literature through the classic Charlotte's Web by E.B. White. They traveled to Theater Works to watch the heartwarming tale of friendship and courage come to life on stage!
Each trip not only broadened our students' horizons but also reinforced their roles as scholars and leaders with heart!

Uncover the Science of Movement!
In the fifth grade, students discovered the intricate workings of the human body! Through the Robot Hand project, they learned the mysteries behind muscle function and bone manipulation. In this hands-on activity, students constructed a model of a human hand, complete with articulated joints and a system of strings mirroring tendons. They observed firsthand how these strings trigger the movement of the fingers and the connection between muscles and bones in body motion. |
