Clairbourn Mathletes Shine Bright at the
Mathcounts and AMC8 Competitions!

Thank you for the dedication of each of our math team members. They had been coming to school early twice a week since the first day of school to prepare for the regional competitions. We have concluded our competitions for this season, with many great results to share!

All twelve members of the Clairbourn Math Team participated in the AMC8, a rigorous nationwide online math competition. Three hundred thousand students took part in AMC competitions across the country and our Cougars showed they are Scholars with HEART as they persevered through difficult problem solving tasks. They made us proud with incredible results. Here are a few of their awards:

School Certificate of Merit: Awarded to a school's team when the top three scorers achieve a combined score of 50 or greater. Congratulations to Tommy L. (7th), Victor Z. (6th) and Isabelle W. (8th) for accomplishing this for Clairbourn!

Honor Roll: Awarded to individual students who score in the top 5% of all participants nationally. Congratulations to Victor Z. (6th) on achieving this award!

Honor Roll of Distinction: Awarded to individual students who score in the top 1% of all participants nationally. Congratulations to Tommy L. (7th) on achieving this award!

This past weekend, all 12 students on the Clairbourn Math Team participated in the MathCounts East San Gabriel Valley Regional Competition in Irwindale. There were students there from 24 schools across the San Gabriel Valley. Everyone came with their best effort and positive attitude and worked hard to compete in four rounds of competition.

Some highlights include:
• Isabelle W. (8th) placing in the top 20% in the individual rounds of competition
• Jerry C. (8th) getting to participate in the live game show style countdown round
• Our team of Isabelle W. (8th), Jerry C. (8th), Joseph A. (8th) and Victor Z. (6th) placing 9th out of 24 teams

Vibrant Music Programs

In our rich music program, students of all ages explore the wonderful world of sound.

Our youngest learners explore rhythm and pitch with boomwhackers, while lower school students strum their way through the basics of music with the baritone ukulele. Building upon their skills, older students elevate their musical foundation through dynamic percussion ensembles featuring boomwhackers.

Meanwhile, intermediate and advanced band members from fourth to eighth grades are rehearsing diligently for the upcoming spring and instrumental concerts. At Clairbourn, students continue to grow their musical skills!
Where Innovation
Meets Heart

Students in I Lab are working on a variety of projects. These include crafting an educational game using Bloxels to address environmental and ocean health for the Games For Change Student Challenge and designing 2D plans for the creation of 3D structures. They are also acquainting themselves with electronic tools such as batteries, motors, LEDs and wire cutters in preparation for our Engineering Design Challenge week in early March.

Students were encouraged to incorporate vibrant colors as well as different shapes into their creations. It was great to witness the support our Cougars gave each other during the process. They helped one another learn the intricacies of 3D printing by guiding their peers through the production of a pink articulated dragon. Some students focused on the development aspect such as how to make it spin or light-up using a motor.

Meanwhile, others explored the electronics, crafting light-up ornaments utilizing switches. Some students devoted their efforts to designing a vibrant dragon vinyl decal using the Cricut machine and concentrated on the 2D aspect of a larger 3D project with the 3D pen.

Our Clairbourn engineers did a great job exploring their critical thinking and creativity!

Embracing Samurai Spirit

Seventh graders utilized their knowledge about Japanese Medieval Samurai.

As they worked together in groups of three, they researched weaponry, armor, the Bushido - the code that samurai follow to be honorable soldiers and citizens, and wrote their own haikus about the famous battles where the samurai defeated the Mongols! They studied the social hierarchy of that time as well. What an engaging way to end the history unit about medieval Japan.

We can't wait to see your final projects!

Who can remember the Leap Year poem from Mrs. Roberts' second grade?

In honor of Leap Day, February 29, Mrs. Roberts treated us to a nostalgic moment during today's assembly, along with both present and former second graders who've shared her class over the past years.

Thirty Days Hath September
Thirty days hath September,
April, June, and November,
All the rest have thirty-one
Except February alone,
Which has twenty-eight days clear
And twenty-nine in each leap year.

Well done, Cougars!

The Science of Leap Year

It takes approximately 365.25 days for Earth to orbit the Sun — a solar year.

We usually round the days in a calendar year to 365. To make up for the missing partial day, we add one day to our calendar approximately every four years. That is a leap year. And that's why sometimes we get 28 or 29 days in the month of February. For those celebrating their birthdays on February 29, it's considered the rarest birthday a person can have. Do you know anyone with a birthday on February 29?
