Clairbourn Insights

A Community Full of Heart

Clairbourn's second grade successfully completed their service learning project! Through this experience, students developed empathy and learned how people live in circumstances different from themselves. This annual pocket change drive collects funds to benefit the Door of Hope, a transitional shelter for families with children who are experiencing homelessness.

Thanks to the generosity of Clairbourn students, staff, parents and alumni, the second grade raised $1,751.92 during their 5-day drive. Two Clairbourn families offered a matching donation this year, which tripled the donations to $5,255.76. Thank you to the Manwani and Chung families for their generosity!

The second graders also developed their math skills as they counted the daily totals and their public speaking skills as they made daily reports to the school. Bravo!

Thank you Clairbourn for your support!

It's time for...
Battle of Books

Battle of the Books is a reading challenge for students from second to eighth grade. It is a national program revised for Clairbourn. Each team of three to four students from grades two to five was challenged to read a total of eight books together as a team. In grades six to eight, each team (one advisory class per team) was challenged to work together to read a total of 16 books.

Teams will answer questions in a quiz show format until there is one winning team left for second, third, fourth and fifth grade, as well as one winning middle school team. Parents are welcome to quietly observe the competition from the bleachers. Winning teams will be presented the following day, at Morning Assembly on Tuesday, January 30.
Here is the schedule!
World of Fractions

Learning through tools, curiosity
and creativity!

Imagine a classroom brimming with third-grade excitement as they discover the world of fractions! Our young learners explore fractions as the essential pieces of mathematics, expressing them in notation, words and creative drawings. With fraction circles as learning tools, students watch fractions fit together like a puzzle, discovering the art of equivalent fractions. The best learning experience includes a journey filled with curiosity and creativity!

Standardized Testing

We will be administering ERB tests Monday 2/5 through Friday 2/9 for second to eighth grade. Please get a good night's sleep, eat a nutritious breakfast and be on time. Go, Cougars!
Trigonometry in Action

Learning From Classroom to
Outdoor Campus

Geometry students from eighth grade used trigonometry to indirectly measure the heights of very tall objects around campus (such as the ginkgo tree)! With meter sticks and handmade clinometers, they measured the horizontal distance to the object and the viewing angle from their eye level to the top. Then they drew right triangles based on their setup and used the tangent ratio to calculate the height of the object accounting for their eye level!

Building Character • Be the Change • Illuminate the World!

The Clairbourn community spent last week at Morning Assembly reflecting on the wisdom of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Throughout the week we discussed how to embrace the Golden Rule and to refrain from judging appearances. His words emphasize moral justice, truth, love, and the interconnectedness of humanity. His words call us to be exemplary citizens and shape a better world.

Let's commit these ideas to daily practice, making our communities and the world a better place to live. Let's continue to be scholars and leaders with HEART, just like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.!
