A Few Important Updates

Dear Clairbourn Families,

We are following the new LA County school guidelines and are now masking indoors. All students and adults need to mask while indoors and are encouraged to mask outdoors when in close contact. We have also moved the Happy Holidays Winter Concert outdoors at 10:30 a.m. to improve the safety and health of the community. Thanks for being flexible in supporting our students.

A huge shout out to the Sugar Plum team! The Sugar Plum event was fun, festive, and full of community bonding. I loved the food and the company. It was so fun to see so many parents enjoying themselves at the event. These events take a team to put on, and this team rocked it!  Thanks so much for putting this together!

We recently learned that Ms. Ann Mize has decided to retire at the end of December. She will be moving up to her cabin in June Lake, her very happy place! Ms. Mize started here in 1997 as the school receptionist and did that job for about a year and a half until the library assistant position opened up. She worked as our library assistant for many years, eventually becoming our librarian. In addition, Ms. Mize has provided us with a wonderful violin program and helped in countless other ways, and we are certainly grateful for each contribution. We are glad to have her until the end of December!

Starting in January, Mr. Josh Elmore has agreed to take the position as a long-term substitute. Mr. Elmore also helped us last year, serving as our long-term substitute for the middle school math position, so he has experience working with our students. He will take the library position and be a second music teacher through the end of the year. The fourth and fifth grade students will all learn a wind instrument for the remainder of the year. Middle school string students wishing to transfer to band are encouraged to talk to Mrs. Kiertzner.

So join me in thanking Ms. Mize for her contribution and welcoming Mr. Elmore back onto the faculty.

Happy Holidays to all!

Transforming Visions and Ideas into Reality

Since the grand opening of the Liu-Peng Innovation Lab this September, it has been a special place for students to imagine and create. The Innovation Lab supports what the students are learning in the classroom. It is designed to help students process, learn and apply new concepts.

Liu-Peng Innovation Lab, led by Mr. Beaber, also provides students a chance to explore and bring their ideas to life. Have you thought about creating a robot to color a project with you? Have you imagined how to create a skyscraper that could withstand to an earthquake? Were you ever curious to build an irrigation pathway to understand why it floods when raining? Those were just a few ideas that came to our students' minds and they DID IT ALL!

As educators, we are dedicated to encouraging future leaders, thinkers, creators and problem solvers. We can't wait to see where our students' imagination and curiosity lead them!

Students Tell Their Stories Through Art

Middle school students produced Picasso-inspired abstract portraits in Ms. Germonprez's art class. Fifth graders used soft pastels and drew portraits in the style of cubism. Eighth graders created portraits with a hands-on clay project. Some middle schoolers did blind contour drawings where they drew portraits of their classmates without looking at the page or ever picking up their pens. The artwork is inspiring!

Kindergarten students finished their Kandinsky-inspired watercolor art and used a sewing/weaving technique to create a border. Lower school students were busy experimenting with mixing acrylic paint and creating figure drawings. Student artwork is displayed in the Nafie building and in the Manor House. Feel free to stop by when you are on the campus!

TIME CHANGE:

Clairbourn Winter Concert Wednesday, December 21 10:30 - 11:30 a.m.
Grades JPK - 8
(noon dismissal)

Out of an abundance of caution and a desire to not crowd our multi-purpose building, we have decided to move our winter concert outdoors to the center quad. To accommodate this change we have changed the show time to 10:30 a.m. on December 21.

Seating on the quad for the outdoor concert starts at 10 a.m. Hot coffee and tea will be provided starting at 10 a.m. for all attending guests.

Students are asked to dress in festive attire that is warm enough for an outdoor concert. They can certainly wear layers!

The concert is approximately 50 minutes. After the concert, the students will return to their classrooms for their holiday party and then depart for home by noon for the start of the winter break. The concert will be recorded and shared.
