A Community We Love

Dear Clairbourn Families,

This week was so much fun with all of the rain. You might think this would be less than ideal for us (it would be if it lasted longer) but so much good was seen through the raindrops. I saw so many examples of people sharing umbrellas, even with those they don't know well, just to keep them dry. I saw lots of people offering to help carry things when juggling umbrellas and their belongings was challenging. I saw parents show up in large numbers to help distribute special lunches to the classrooms so students wouldn't have to walk in the rain. And I saw students smiling and laughing as they got to use their rain boots to jump and splash in the puddles (pure joy).

This week has also been a little tougher on the health office. We have had to send many students home with coughs and/or fevers. Please help us keep the community as healthy as possible by keeping students home if they have symptoms. Also, please let us know if someone in your household tests positive. It is important to apply the masking rules when they apply. Thanks for your support in keeping the community safe.

Lastly, a very big thank you to all of the teachers who worked so hard to prepare for conference day. This is a group of dedicated, professional, and passionate teachers who make our community strong, vibrant, and joyful!

Clairbourn Insights

See Through A Child's Eyes

A child's self-portrait can reveal many things. As with any drawing, it shows the development of a child's fine motor, observation and focusing skills. It also can give insight into a child's self-concept and is the best way for a grown-up to see a child through that child's own eyes. Let's see some of the self-portraits from our Grasshopper PK classroom!
Dia de los Muertos

Clairbourn students took a deep dive into the Hispanic culture and embraced the celebration of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). They tasted sweet buns, decorated festive Dia de los Muertos cookies, sang songs in Spanish, and prepared presentations to honor and remember the important members of their family who passed. It is portrayed as a holiday of joyful celebration rather than mourning. Great job, Cougars!

Inspiration from Author & Illustrator
Benson Shum

Last week author Benson Shum made presentations to our JPK - 3rd graders, read stories and he even taught our Cougars how to draw a character from his books! Students asked many good questions and were inspired by his imagination and creativity!

Teacher Appreciation Group Gift Card Drive Runs 11/14 - 12/2

Every holiday season, the CFA organizes a group gift card drive to make it easier for parents to show their appreciation for our faculty and staff. The Group Gift Card Program allows you to participate in a group gift for your child’s teachers and to acknowledge the other faculty and staff that interact with you and your children.

Clairbourn faculty and staff pre-select the Scrip gift cards they would like to receive and families contribute toward the purchase of those cards. Gift cards will be distributed to the faculty and staff, along with a list of the families who contributed to their group gift.

The Water Cycles

It's perfect timing to have some rain this week as our fifth graders are studying water cycles! They investigated how water cycles from the Earth’s surface to the atmosphere and back again. In this hands-on activity called "Make It Rain," students built simple models of the ocean and sky to see how these two systems interact. They compared how the temperature of the ocean and the temperature of the sky affect evaporation and condensation. What a fun, learning experiment!

Byzantine Empire

Seventh graders enjoyed their Middle Ages study on the Byzantine Empire. They worked with a partner to visit different sites from the Byzantine Empire. Students discussed each area in depth and answered comprehension questions.

At the Hagia Sophia site, seventh graders assembled mosaics which were an important art form from this time period. Students also listened to Byzantine music and wore their Roman crowns.
Holiday Giving: Children Helping Children in Need

This year’s Holiday Gift Giving Drive runs from November 10 to 29. Clairbourn will support Hillsides in Pasadena which provides comprehensive services and advocacy for young adults and families.

You can support Hillsides in two ways: (1) Amazon Wish Lists: Hillsides Holiday Wish List - Clairbourn 2022.
Once you have chosen the holiday wish(es), select the HILLSIDES shipping address at checkout. Please include the wish list title, your full name, and Clairbourn School so that that Hillsides can send you an acknowledgement letter to claim your tax deduction.

(2) Fund two parties for the kids at Hillsides: a 2-hour puppy party and a 2-hour petting zoo and pony ride party. You may make a tax-deductible donation to Hillsides to fund the parties in one of two ways: (1) a check made payable to Hillsides (on the memo line write Clairbourn - Holiday Donation) and send to Hillsides, Attn.: Ms. Laura Kelso, 940 Avenue 64, Pasadena, CA 91105, or (2) pay through Hillsides’s WEDIDIT page.

Please contact Heather Jones, Holiday Gift Giving Chair, for any questions.
