Much To Be Grateful For

Dear Clairbourn Families,

I can't believe we are already in November! This month we are focused on gratitude and making sure we are all recognizing the good around us. We have started on a special community project to point out and share the good with each other. It takes the form of a tree in the MPB where we are each adding a leaf with our gratitude. Over the next few weeks we will be adding gratitude leaves to our display one class at a time. If any parents want to share gratitude and join the community in spotlighting the good, we have extra leaves in the front office for you.

I am also grateful for the improvements happening on Huntington Drive. They will be adding an additional signal to the stretch east of the school. For a few months that means we will have extra traffic and extra delays going east past the school, so please plan accordingly to arrive on time while still being safe.

As a community effort to help students focus on their work at school, we are requiring all Pokemon cards or other trading cards to remain at home. Thanks for your help reinforcing this with the students. Happy November!

Conference Day

Wednesday, November 9 is Parent/Teacher Conference Day for grades JPK through 5th grade.

Follow this link to schedule a conference time with your child's teacher. Use event code: kjh78. Follow the instructions on each page and indicate your preference for a Zoom OR an in-person meeting. You will receive an email confirmation of your Conference Day booking. School Bookings will close on November 7 at 4 p.m., so please book your conference time before then. It is vital that
parents keep to this schedule and end their appointments in a timely manner. If you think you will need more time, please discuss this with your teacher during the appointment.

For families of all 6th & NEW 7th/8th grade students: Here is a letter with specific instructions from the Assistant Head of School, Mrs. Taylor, regarding middle school conferences.

Drop Everything & Build

October's Design Challenge:
Building towers to hold a cell phone

On Fathers and Grandparents Visiting Day, the Middle School Drop Everything & Build Challenge was to build the tallest tower that could support their visitor’s cell phone. The only materials the students could use were 20 index cards.  Students were initially concerned there was no tape but they found creative ways to build sturdy towers.

Congratulations to all our Cougar engineers! In sixth grade, the runners-up were Matty M. and Anthony M., and the winners were Mary L. and Matthew C. In seventh grade, the runners-up were Valen S. and Akira T., and the winners were Jerry C. and Vicky S. In eighth grade, the runners-up were Annika L. and Arthur Z., and the winners were Shalom L. and Louis L., who were the overall winners.
Holiday Giving

Children Helping Children in Need

This year’s Holiday Gift Giving Drive runs from November 10 to 29. Clairbourn will support Hillsides in Pasadena which provides comprehensive services and advocacy for young adults and families through five core programs, including residential treatment, foster care, and adoption.

Clairbourn will support Hillsides in two ways this year. The first is by purchasing gifts from Amazon Wish Lists that the children at Hillsides have created. Please use this link to make purchases: Hillsides Holiday Wish List - Clairbourn 2022. Once you have chosen the holiday wish(es), select the HILLSIDES shipping address at checkout (for some, it may be listed under “other addresses”). Please include the wish list title, your full name, and Clairbourn School so that that Hillsides can send you an acknowledgement letter to claim your tax deduction.

Clairbourn will also fund two parties for the kids at Hillsides! The first is a 2-hour puppy party with 10 to 15 puppies in a pen for the kids to play with, plus a snack for the children. The second is a 2-hour petting zoo and pony ride party. You may make a tax-deductible donation to Hillsides to fund the parties in one of two ways: (1) a check made payable to Hillsides (on the memo line write Clairbourn - Holiday Donation) and send to Hillsides, Attn.: Ms. Laura Kelso, 940 Avenue 64, Pasadena, CA 91105, or (2) pay through Hillsides’s WEDIDIT page.

Please contact Heather Jones, Holiday Gift Giving Chair, for any questions.

Student Council Thanks You!

Clairbourn’s first Socktober was a smashing success! Our families donated an astonishing 1,264 pairs of socks!!!

The socks will be distributed to the Door of Hope, Union Station, Impact House, and Elizabeth House. We have shown that a small act of love can be multiplied a thousandfold and make a big difference in the lives of people in our community who are experiencing homelessness.

Thank you to everyone who supported Socktober!

Native American Heritage Month

Student Council prepared an educational presentation to celebrate Native American Heritage Month. Learn more about the iconic figures presented this week: Maria Tallchief, Sacagawea and Louis Sockalexis.

Looking for a new way to volunteer and connect with other parents? Come to campus for a folding and labeling party.

The Development Office is preparing for a large mailing to alumni and we could use some help folding, stuffing envelopes and adding address labels. Please reach out to Joannes Rodriguez if you are available to help at any time between 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 7 and Tuesday, Nov. 8.

Become a Vendor at the Sugar Plum

The beloved community Sugar Plum event is on December 9. It is a unique Clairbourn tradition where parents come together to package holiday ornaments for the students and the faculty and staff. Join us for breakfast and holiday boutique shopping. A portion of the proceeds from vendors will be donated to the CFA. Anyone who is interested in being a vendor for Clairbourn's Sugar Plum event, please contact Apryle, Emily or Liz.
