A Week Full of Action
Dear Clairbourn Families,
We have had a very busy couple of weeks. Last week Clairbourn participated in the Great California Shake Out. We did a complete earthquake drill including having our sweep teams find students and faculty with "injuries" and treating them at our health area. We also opened our earthquake container to show the students our supplies that are available in case of an emergency. We have water, food bars, shade, blankets, and pop up toilets. It was a great practice for us and we have added a few more things to our supply container as a result of feedback from participants. We added a solar panel for charging phones or other power needs, glow sticks for night time illumination of the toilet areas, and a few more items that may be helpful.
The Book Fair was also a great source of reading and joy this week. We loved the author visit and look forward to the next one! We are so grateful for the many parent volunteers, led by Fiona Zhang and our librarian Ann Mize for their hard work and successful promotion of our love of reading. Way to go team!
Halloween is coming and I reminded the students to avoid bloody, gory, or scary costumes and to leave the weapons at home. We are excited to celebrate creativity and joy in our costumes here at school since we have a wide age range and want to be sure everyone is having fun!
I would also like to encourage everyone to arrive on time. The morning transportation has been getting busy later and later each day. Let's set the alarms for 5 minutes earlier and prevent the morning rush.
Lastly, a big thanks to all the dads, grandparents, and special guests who came to school today. I loved watching the pride in student faces when they showed their guest their work. It is a special thing to see grandparents holding hands with their grandchildren as they walk down the sidewalks or to witness the special looks of love when dads see their children demonstrate a new skill. Thanks to everyone who turned out.

Red Ribbon Week: Making Good Choices
We celebrated Red Ribbon Week. The mission is to stop kids from taking drugs and educate students why drugs are dangerous. Thank you to Student Council for putting on a week-long presentation about the importance of making good choices. We learned not to use or touch any prescription drugs without permission from a parent or guardian, to have healthy eating habits, and to stay away from strangers.
How do we make good choices? We do so by thinking about how it might affect you and others. In order to encourage school-wide participation, Student Council initiated an activity to make a giant red chain made from individual rings with each student’s signature. We hope our
Cougars learned about making good choices and using those skills in everyday life. It is a great way for our middle school students to demonstrate their leadership while raising awareness of Red Ribbon Week! You are all scholars and leaders with heart!

Our Cougars showed school spirit through persistence and team work!
We concluded boys flag football and girls volleyball season. Our flag football players worked hard and improved their skills, teamwork and knowledge of the game. Each athlete brought a positive attitude and determination while developing their skills. Teammates supported each other and continued to create opportunities for each other to grow as a team! The volleyball teams made so much growth this season and everyone gave their best effort. We are proud of the athleticism shown by each of them. Girls B volleyball team took almost every match to three games which gave them more competitive experience and it truly showcased their collective determination as teams.
Congratulations for a great season and to all of the award recipients below!

School News: International ShakeOut Day
Clairbourn joined millions of people worldwide to participate in earthquake drills on International ShakeOut Day - October 20. Our students and staff practiced the importance of taking immediate action in case of an earthquake. The safety of our students and staff is our priority and we are proud of our Cougars for doing an excellent job in learning how to protect themselves and put our loved ones out of harm’s way! |
Clairbourn Insight: Architecture Through Mathematics
Fifth graders are enjoying a unique math project that allows them to design a village of 3D buildings. Students use their mathematical concepts of rectangular prisms and apply their skills to their architectural drawings. Their village designs include streets, buildings, and the volume for each building. What a great way to see how math is all around us! |

Community Service Opportunity for Door of Hope
Our Student Council made October a "Socktober" month! They are asking everyone to donate a new, unused pair of socks to Door of Hope.
At Clairbourn, we create Scholars and Leaders with Heart. A small act of love, such as donating a pair of socks, can make a big difference in the lives of people in our community who are homeless.
Thank you to the Student Council for this idea. Please bring your new pairs of socks, in children or adult sizes, to the box at transportation between now and the end of Socktober. Thank you!
