From Head of School
Let's End the School Year Strong!
Dear Clairbourn Families,
This week is Teacher Appreciation Week. I love this week because it reminds us all to express our gratitude. We are grateful for the amazing effort, passion, dedication and creativity exhibited each day by our teachers. This week, we make a special point of letting them know how much they are appreciated for their work.
Thanks to Mrs. Rosemary Kiertzner for a wonderful Spring Concert. It was full of happy, inspiring and uplifting music and was performed with heart by our students. It is so fun to see the hard work of weeks of rehearsals come together in a very successful show!
A huge thank you to the CFA and especially Jonathan Lim and the hard-working Fair committee for the wonderful fair! I saw smiles on every face, children and adults alike. Well done one and all!
As I write this, I am hearing the rehearsals for the Instrumental Concert. They are making great improvement in this effort as well. I can't wait to see that performance too.
Well done, Cougars!

Clairbourn Insights
Thank you for celebrating friendship and community with us! JPK to fifth grade students showed us what they have learned in music classes. Besides learning how to read and write music, students learned how to play rhythms, use new instruments and apply the solfege method! At Clairbourn, we find countless opportunities to grow. Through music, we inspire and motivate creativity. We teach children to embrace challenges with positivity.
Special thank you to our music director for a great show, the administration for your support, to JPK through fifth grade teachers for your assistance and patience, and to the maintenance crew for your hard work and clever ideas!

Clairbourn Families Association (CFA)
Thank you to everyone who came out to support our Spring Fair this year!
Dear Clairbourn Families,
What a fair! We had it all from ferris wheels, roller coasters, nerf gun battles, petting zoos and shaved ice to corn dogs. Thank you so much to the fair chair, Jonathan Lim and the fair committee for making it happen. A lot of work was put into the event. It was worth it seeing how much fun the children and parents had. Special gratitude goes out to our wonderful community for attending and our generous sponsors for supporting the fair.

Welcome to the World of Science
Seventh graders were studying the nervous system and they welcomed a current parent, Dr. Shieh, for a special visit to the class. Dr. Shieh presented his work in regenerative medicine and discussed how microcurrents affect different body systems. He also shared examples of stem cells repairing function in children and adults. Thank you to Dr. Shieh for helping the seventh graders learn!
Eighth grade students learned about energy transfer in science class. We all use so much energy in our lives every day to regulate the temperature in our homes, schools and offices – how can we use technology and choices to become more energy efficient? After conducting experiments about passive cooling of houses and learning about LEED certification for green buildings, students used reclaimed materials to construct models of buildings with features that demonstrate LEED requirements for sustainable sites.

To kick off Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, we are honoring Hong Yen Chang and Dr. Kazue Togasaki.
Mr. Chang was the first Chinese graduate of Columbia Law School and the first Chinese American admitted to practice law in the United States. He overcame barriers throughout his life and blazed a trail for others during his distinguished career. Mr. Chang played an important role in advocating for Chinese American civil rights and working toward greater understanding and cooperation between the two nations. To learn more about Hong Yen Chang, please click here.
Dr. Kazue Togasaki was one of the first Japanese American women to become a doctor in the United States. She was born and raised in San Francisco and delivered over 10,000 babies in her long career serving the Japanese American population in the city. She was strong-willed, brave, and always stepped up for her community. Dr. Togasaki is an incredible gem in the history of San Francisco. To learn more about Kazue Togasaki, please click here. |

Learn. Grow. Repeat.
Our kindergarteners have been busy learning science and biology! Students observed silkworms and learned about their life cycles. Each student got to select their own silkworm and make a little home for it. Soon they will start spinning their cocoons!
Did you know?
Silk thread is actually hardened silkworm saliva and on larger silkworms it is possible to see eight pairs of legs, claspers and a beating heart. Silkworms do not have lungs and breath through small holes in the sides of their body.
Kindergarten students also loved meeting the representatives from the Los Angeles Beekeepers Association. They were most excited to observe the beehive and see the smoker. They even got to see the queen laying her eggs! Next time when you see a kindergartener, ask them what a beehive smells like!

Celebrating Teacher Appreciation Day with the Dodgers!

Auction Highlights
Auction Item: Laser Tag Party
Students enjoyed an afternoon of outdoor laser tag! They connected through this high-energy game and enjoyed a break from school. What a fun auction event to promote socialization while creating lasting memories!
Auction Item: Flower Arrangement Party
Parents came together to learn how to create dry floral arrangements. Current parent, Mrs. Debra Sun, provided instruction on techniques and tips for creating various types of arrangements. Thank you for supporting Clairbourn while having some fun and learning a new hobby at the same time! |
