A Community Full of Heart

Dear Clairbourn Families,

Thanks to the Benefit Team for a fantastic Gala Auction! It had a great vibe and was so much fun for everyone in attendance. I was grateful to see so many families bidding, supporting the school, and making sure the students are benefiting from the generosity of the community. I was also thrilled with the joy and excitement visible at every table. Three cheers for the Benefit Team!

We are also coming to the end of our third quarter. Can you believe it?!? We have had so many wonderful events, learning opportunities, field trips, and chances to grow and develop as both individuals and as a school. Now, we are ready to start our last quarter and finish the year with energy and enthusiasm for what is yet to come. One of the first events for the fourth quarter is the middle school drama production. I can’t wait to see it next week!

The Benefit Auction & Bollywood Gala was Unforgettable!

Dear Clairbourn Families:
Thank you for gathering to celebrate and support your children’s education this past weekend. Guests were dressed in gorgeous outfits, and we enjoyed a night of entertaining performances, witnessed why our kids love Clairbourn, indulged in premier dining and danced the night away! The event was held at the Le Meridien in Arcadia on March 11 and 200 parents, teachers, faculty, alumni, trustees, friends and family of the school were in attendance. Our largest fundraiser of the year raised more than $156,000 for the enrichment and education for our kids!

Tekoah Kler and Melissa Nijjar had a grandeur vision for this year’s benefit six months ago. They wanted to continue to build on our diverse culture at Clairbourn while highlighting Indian culture with our largest fundraiser of the year. Through the process and journey leading up to March 11, that vision was becoming reality. You built it and they came. This Bollywood event does not happen without the time, effort, patience, attitude and energy that both of you exhibited with grace. They brought the Bollywood theme to life at the gala with the vibrant Indian décor, Indian dancers, dhol drums and music, Indian desserts and treats, and amazing Indian outfits that the community respected and embraced. We appreciate both of you!

An important component of the benefit fundraiser is our annual auction. This year we had both a silent online auction and a live auction. We want to thank Connie Kim for taking the initiative of handling the auction from beginning to end. Her required patience and daily efforts went above and beyond all our expectations. And we needed all of it!

We appreciate and give special extra thanks to all the donors and parents that helped procure all our auction items! Many popular winning items include “Fly Fishing with Mr. Jubilado,” “Weekend Getaway to La Quinta,” and “Mystery Surprise Box!” The live auction had tremendous success with “A Week in Hawaii,” “Parking Spot,” and a surprise item “The Curtis Stone Dining Experience!”

Fiona and I could not have finished the job without the strength and support of our entire Benefit Team. The following parents collectively made this event successful! Each of them contributed without any hesitation to support the Benefit in some capacity: Ting Sung, Lucy Balikian, Miwa Takayanagi, Tetyana Kuzmyna, Lisa Li, Dana Wong, John and Floy Shieh, John Liu, Apryle Ferguson, Liz Wong, Eric Sasahara, Jessie Zhang, Jeanette Zamora, Tina Keshishian, Wendy Shen, Bhart Manwani and Patricia Nijjar.

We save the best for last, and that is YOU!

From beginning to end,
we had many parents, teachers, faculty,
trustees and families
give us overwhelming encouragement and support for the Benefit of our children….. and this is Why We Love Clairbourn.

With complete gratitude,
Benefit Chairs Fiona Zhang & Brian Chung

Celebrating the love of math and numbers!

Did you know pi is an irrational number that goes on infinitely without repeating? Did you know pi is a mathematical constant and is equal to the ratio of any circle's circumference to its diameter? And the first Pi Day was celebrated in San Francisco in 1988? And March 14 is also the birthday of Albert Einstein?

Thank you to the middle school math team for sharing those fun facts about pi at Morning Assembly this week! Younger students enjoyed listening to the middle schoolers sing the pi song of the first 100 digits. And guess what? We heard a student from seventh grade recite 171 digits! Pi Day was all about celebrating the love of math and numbers and it was seen throughout all the classrooms!

Learning through experiences!

Pre-algebra students performed a ball drop math lab in order to investigate slope. Students dropped balls from various heights and used slow motion recordings to collect data on the height of each initial bounce.

They created tables, graphs and equations to analyze their data (drop height vs. bounce height) for each different type of ball and discovered the slope for each ball is how much higher the ball bounces for each additional foot added of drop height!

Thank you for supporting the middle school book drive service learning project!

Middle school students collected more than 300 used picture and chapter books for the Holy Family Services Adoption Center in Echo Park. Thank you for supporting middle school and spreading the love of literature!

Clairbourn Life

Painting is another form of thinking!

Eighth graders learned about the artist Gerhard Richter. He is known for his unique style of painting which is a mixture of adding paint / layering and using a myriad of tools, but focused on one large scraping tool, to create the aesthetic. Students created many masterpieces of their own too (see below)!

Clairbourn Connection

We love connecting with our young alums!

Casey U. and Danielle L. are both from the Class of 2013. They attended Maranatha High School together. Casey went to Pepperdine University and Danielle L. attended Southern Methodist University. They kept in touch through the college years and stayed close. They are both now living and working in Texas. They visited us last week and shared many fond Clairbourn memories!

Jeanilou G. is a 1994 graduate of Clairbourn. She relocated to Hawaii where she currently lives with her husband and two daughters. Her family was in town for a few days on vacation and they made sure Clairbourn was one of the stops!

International Women's Day

March 8 was International Women’s Day. It is a day to celebrate women's achievements, raise awareness about discrimination and take action for gender equality. It is part of Women’s History Month, when we celebrate the contributions women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields.
