Let Our Cougar Spirit Roar

Dear Clairbourn Families,

This week has been very wet, but it hasn't dampened our spirits. We are hosting a B track meet today on our campus and it is a real treat to see our students trying their best, cheering each other on, and supporting their teammates. I love the heart that is so fully on display during these events. Way to go Cougars!

I have also been thinking a lot about the workshops and keynote talks I attended last week at the conference. Two of the keynote addresses talked about overcoming polarization in a community or nation. I was thinking about our community here at Clairbourn and am grateful there isn't a huge divide. We most certainly have a range of ideas, opinions, views, backgrounds, and goals, but we can talk to each other, listen to each other, and respect each other, even if we don't always agree. That is part of what makes a community strong, and I am grateful we are supportive and respectful of each other.

We all share a common goal of helping our students to become Scholars and Leaders with Heart!

Clairbourn Insights

Second Grade Expert Thursday

Second grade has been developing students' public speaking skills during our Expert Thursday project. Each week students give presentations on topics that interest them. We have heard about horseback riding, egg art, Japanese culture, ukuleles, lego building, soccer, and much more. After each presentation, the expert takes questions from the class. It is wonderful to see these young students gain confidence speaking before a group.
Understanding Sikhism

Sixth graders have been learning about different world religions. To enrich their understanding of Sikhism, middle school history teacher Ms. Neilson invited Dr. Natasha Kaur and her husband Bhajneet Singh to join their class and help them understand the culture and history. They gave a wonderful presentation which included Sikh music and a slideshow. They also gave students an opportunity to wear one of the five articles of faith, a headwrap. Mr. Singh is also a children's book author and he donated his books to our classroom!

Student Council: Honoring Black History Month

As the Student Council continues to celebrate diversity, we interviewed a member of our Clairbourn community. Thank you Mrs. Jones for sharing your heritage with us!

We loved learning about your hero Jack Greenberg. His contribution to equality and ending segregation in schools changed history. Jack Greenberg stood up for what's right and he showed us how to be a LEADER WITH HEART!

When asked about her favorite thing from her culture, Mrs. Jones shared, "The moment when President Obama presented Maya Angelou with the 2010 Presidential Medal of Freedom."

As President Obama said, "By holding on even amid cruelty and loss, and then expanding to a sense of compassion, an ability to love – by holding on to her humanity, she has inspired countless others who have known injustice and misfortune in their own lives." Maya Angelou is another inspiring example of how to be a SCHOLAR WITH HEART!

Clairbourn Life

We are enjoying the recent cooler temperatures. Look at fourth graders' reaction to hail!

Parents, please share and upload your photos to Vidigami! We love to see special moments captured on film around the campus! Login Vidigami to view and download more photos from this week! Please email Jeanette Zamora for Vidigami support.

Life Science in Kindergarten

Our kindergarten students are learning about life science in the classroom. They read books about chickens and their life cycles, and they are now candling fertilized eggs to observe the growth and development of an embryo inside an egg. Soon they will have exciting news to share with us when the eggs hatch! Stay tuned!

PK Scavenger Hunt in the Nafie Administration Building!

PK students went on a scavenger hunt and learned about identifying objects. As they toured the building, they met some of the administrators in the accounting office. We love having our young Cougars visiting the office!

Thank You!

Our Clairbourn community is keeping our students safe during these rainy and chilly days!

Special thank you to our teachers for keeping our students safe during transportation time, and to our parent volunteers for making sure students have warm meals delivered to the classroom!

There is no community like our Clairbourn family and we are grateful for each of you!
