At Clairbourn, We Are All Learners!

Dear Clairbourn Families,

This is a short week at school for all of us, but still a productive one. We always focus on the learning that goes on in the classrooms and that is certainly continuing. We also support learning and growth for the faculty and staff. On Tuesday we heard from presenters who spoke to the faculty about supporting neurodiverse learners. They gave us a lot of great information and some new tools that come from current research.

I love that I also get to keep learning. This week Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. Paciorek, Mrs. Rodriguez and I are attending the NAIS (National Association of Independent Schools) annual conference to hear nationally-recognized speakers and learn along with our colleagues from schools around the nation. It is a great chance for us to keep up with current research, learn new approaches and explore new ideas. At Clairbourn, we are all learners!

Creativity Takes Courage

Henri Matisse said, "Creativity takes courage!" It takes courage to express the things you are passionate about and share your feelings openly. Our Cougars do just that in art class! Fifth graders enjoyed creating Veera Zukova-inspired works in oil pastel. Zukova is known for her abstract art. Second graders explored soft pastels and produced stunning artwork of octopuses and squid. We asked the students their favorite activity in art and one answered "I love blending with my fingers, and being messy and free!"
Why is Water
Necessary for Life?

The Search for Water Journey
with our Fifth Grade

Our fifth graders went on Griffith Observatory's The Search for Water virtual field trip and learned how water is essential for life! They looked inward at our own planet with thriving life forms, and then outward for other water-lush worlds. The unique properties of water were examined with a variety of demonstrations, and the resilience of life was explored with footage from Earth’s extreme places. Students were then guided through the solar system in search of environments that sustain water.

C.A.S.T.: The Seussification of Romeo and Juliet

Forces of Flight: Weight, Lift, Thrust, Drag

The eighth grade class recently wrapped up their study of forces and flight, including several hands-on labs to learn more about the four forces of flight: weight, lift, thrust, and drag.

Students built and compared two different paper airplanes to determine the effect of weight, wing size and wing design on distance and duration of flight. To learn more about the effect of turbulence on drag, students built paper kites and varied the length of the tails. The kites with smaller tails barely took flight, while the kites with longer tails were able to fly high even with very little wind!
