Our Cougars Showing Heart

Dear Clairbourn Families,

Today, I am excited to give a big cheer to the second grade. They did a fantastic job supporting the Door of Hope. This is a great organization that supports families to break the cycle of homelessness. It was so informative to hear from the executive director of the Door of Hope and learn they have a better than 80% success rate in their clients becoming self-sufficient after going through their program. Thank you to the second grade for helping to educate us and supporting a great organization.

Also a huge shout-out to the middle school Math Team! They did an exceptional job at the regional tournament last weekend with students placing in the top 10%! Wow! The top 10% of an already elite group is amazing! Well done on the hard work and preparation. We are proud of our Math Team!

It's... Jungle Time!

Earth and Life Science:
Exploring the Ground Beneath our Feet

Students enjoyed studying the ground beneath their feet and the processes of weathering, erosion, and deposition which shape our planet. Each sixth grader took a sample of soil from various locations in the jungle in order to observe the complex composition of the mixture. They then worked in groups to set up quadrats to analyze the texture of the soil, which is an important property that affects soil drainage and fertility.

In seventh grade life science, students are identifying adaptations in plants and animals that increase the organisms’ chances of successful survival and reproduction. During a trip to the jungle, students observed seeds, berries, acorns, spider webs, ant hills, colorful flowers attracting pollinators, and bird nests high up in the trees!

Students enjoyed working with their hands and learning outdoors!
Way to Go,
Clairbourn Mathletes!

Congratulations to Our Math Team!

Twelve members of Clairbourn's Math Team competed in the regional MathCounts competition this past Saturday at Cal Poly Pomona. There were between 100-200 top math students from over 20 schools across the San Gabriel Valley. Our mathletes worked hard to compete in four rounds of competition.
Our team of four students (Louis L., Theo W., Fredric S., and William W.) ranked in the collaborative team round, placing sixth! Louis L. (eighth grade) ranked in the top 10% of all participants with his overall individual score for the day, advancing him to the state round of competition in March!
Clairbourn Insights

Deeper Understanding of Hinduism
and Buddhism

To expand the sixth grade social studies Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism unit, students enjoyed a field trip to the Norton Simon Museum, which houses a world-renowned collection of Asia Pacific art!

Ms. Neilson was formerly in the education department of the Norton Simon so she was able to add her insights as she conducted the tour of the beautiful Hindu and Buddhist statues. The students took notes and discussed the 2,000-year-old sculptures from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Tibet, Cambodia, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Burma (Myanmar), China, Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand. What a great opportunity to see art in person!

The Door of Hope Service Learning Project Concluded This Week!

Second grade learned about homelessness from the director of the Door of Hope and they collected pocket change to support their mission. Students were able to raise $1,959.53 to help those families in need. Special thank you to the parents who volunteered to match the gift, bringing our total to almost $4,000. What a great way to show heart!

Kindergarten & First Grade Celebrated 100th Day of School

This week, we took a moment to reflect on the work undertaken by our students and faculty as we celebrated the achievements and milestones of our 100 days of school! We saw their hard work and growth as individuals and as a community. We love to watch our students' curiosity blossom into knowledge and actions. After only 100 days of school, their passion for learning is evident as they soar to new heights. We cannot wait to see what the next 100 days will bring!

Act of Kindness

We are celebrating Random Acts of Kindness Week from February 14 to February 20. It is a celebration of all the ways we can become a positive influence in each other's lives. Even one small act of kindness can mean a great deal to somebody.
