Persist, Adapt, Succeed and a Growth Mindset!

Dear Clairbourn Families,

This week is our Engineering Design Challenge week! It is one of my favorite weeks of the year because the students get to practice engineering thinking and have the opportunity to hear from real engineers. This year, Ms. Vinnedge, our Engineering Week Coordinator got to show the students how to persist, adapt, and succeed. On Tuesday, she was informed that the engineer who was scheduled to be here on Wednesday to present to our students was ill and would not be able to come. With less than 24 hours' notice, she was able to find three other engineers who were willing to Zoom with our students and talk to them about what engineering looks like in real life. We had one who is a civil engineer who works on buildings in Chicago, one who is a network engineer working in the digital space, and one who works primarily on robots at JPL and was part of the Mars helicopter. She also coordinated with Mr. Bieber to visit each class during their building to help students think through their approach to the challenge. The students got a lot out of the presentations and went on to do their own engineering work with the marble run. Go Cougars! And well done, Ms. Vinnedge, in putting together such a successful event!

Next week will be a big week for the community as our school is going through accreditation. As you know, we are accredited by both CAIS (California Association of Independent Schools) and WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges). We will have six visitors on campus to see how we work and what our school is like. They check
to see we are following the requirements for accreditation and also compare our submitted report (our self-study) to what they see. It is a very positive experience for us as a school to ensure we are doing our best work. There is
typically a lot of validation of the things we do well and also some ideas on how we can improve.

Just like our students, we have a growth mindset as a school!

Student Council

Please Welcome the Newly-Elected Middle School Representatives for Semester Two!

We have 14 students who put their hats in the ring to become second semester Student Council class representatives. The representatives will work with the officers to continue the work of Student Council to plan theme days, celebrate cultural heritage months, and plan more community events for our students.

Students in grades 6-8 wishing to serve on Student Council must meet the citizenship and academic standards and they must maintain the requirements in order to retain their positions on the Student Council. Please congratulate the new middle school representatives for semester two!

6th grade: Tommy L. and Teddy S.
7th grade: Marc C. and Isabelle W.
8th grade: Shalom L. and Jack Z.
Clairbourn Insights

Our second graders are always excited to learn to write in cursive. We started learning our lowercase letters in November, with the basic strokes: undercurve, overcurve, downcurve, and slant. Soon we will be ready to move on to the capital letters. The teachers are impressed with the careful, focused practice we see from our students each afternoon. By the end of the school year, students will be writing entirely in cursive, and be ready for third grade!
Clairbourn Math Team

Math Team Competes in AMC 8

Clairbourn's Middle School Math Team participated in the AMC8 competition this morning. The AMC8 is a national exam that focuses on problem-solving skills and analytical thinking. Our team of 19 hard-working students has been meeting twice a week before school to practice and prepare.

Thank you for representing Clairbourn so well, Math Team!
Drama Production

The Seussification of Romeo and Juliet

Clairbourn School has teamed up with A Noise Within to put on the play The Seussification of Romeo and Juliet by Peter Bloedel. The play is billed as "a whimsical reinvention of Shakespeare's tragic love story, complete with rhymed couplets, creative wordplay, and fantastical machines -- similar to something Dr. Seuss might have come up with if he ever had his way with the script." Students in middle school auditioned on Jan. 9 and will have their first rehearsal on Monday. The play will be performed live in the MPB at the end of March.
