Another Great Year of Growth & Learning
Dear Clairbourn Families,
As we start out the new year, we are eager for new growth, new opportunities to learn, and new possibilities. It is exciting to see what develops as we take advantage of these opportunities. Our middle schoolers had the opportunity to audition for the Spring drama production and to run for Student Council positions. These kinds of opportunities come with both risks and rewards. What if they don't get elected? What if they don't get the part? What if they get the part and they make a mistake? It can be a little scary, but what if they don't try? If the students don't put themselves out there, they don't have the opportunity to stretch and grow. The act of running for office or auditioning is part of the learning process.
Another part of learning can also be the experience of not getting what they hoped for on the first try. This is where we can help the students look at the situation and evaluate what could have been done differently so next time there is an improvement. If the student stops with the initial feeling of disappointment and doesn't look at the opportunities for growth, they miss out on learning. It is our job as adults to allow the students to experience disappointment and then help them move into improvement by looking at ways of approaching things differently, working on skills, or preparing in a more effective way.
Here's to another great year of growth and learning!

How To Writing Unit: How could you make the Grinch grin?
First graders wrapped up their How To writing unit and Sequence of Events in reading. The students studied the story "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" by listening to the classic story and discussing the order of events. They were further challenged with a writing prompt, "How could you make the Grinch grin?" Students came up with many clever ideas. To wrap up this unit, first graders learned how to draw the Grinch and used glitter paint to bring him to life! Their paintings and stories were truly magical! |
Did you know tamales originated approximately 2,000 years ago in Mesoamerica, a region in Central America that covers southern Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and northern Costa Rica?
Did you know there are more than 30 tamale flavors and 350 different types of tamales around the world? Some are wrapped in banana or corn leaves, some are sweet and filled with chocolate, raisins and nuts and others are savory.
In Clairbourn Spanish classes, students learn the language, explore the culture and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them. Learning is not limited to a textbook. It also occurs through taste, hands-on activities and conversations! |

Clairbourn students gain fundamental understanding of how and why things function.
Science allows us to share ideas and help us understand our world. These are important skills we foster at Clairbourn.
Seventh graders studied how adaptations increase an organism’s chances of survival. Invoking the well known example of peppered moths in England during the Industrial Revolution, students investigated the process often called “survival of the fittest.”
Sixth grade students explored the wide variety of mineral resources and the processes needed to extract them from Earth. They learned how to balance humans’ demands for resources with the impact on the surrounding ecosystems.
