Middle School Harry Potter Unit: A Tool for Self-Discovery and Pop-Cultural Literacy

Opportunity for creative expression, self-discovery, community-building, and increased cultural literacy were the primary benefits experienced by seventh and eighth grade students involved in a two-week, immersive unit on J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone at Clairbourn School. Third Grade's Thanksgiving Feast

Third Grade Teacher Mrs. Susan Ward discovered that many of her students had never celebrated Thanksgiving nor experienced a Thanksgiving meal. So, she decided to give her class an early Thanksgiving celebration. Outside of school hours, Mrs. Ward sourced and made some of the dishes to provide a full Thanksgiving feast for her students as a surprise. Traditional Thanksgiving foods were included like turkey, stuffing, rolls, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes and gravy, and two giant pumpkin pies with a lot of whipped cream. The food was even displayed on a table intertwined with decorative accents including beautiful Thanksgiving flower bouquets. In the spirit of the holiday, students wore paper turkey hats that tied together the entire celebratory atmosphere.
