How We Approach Things Counts
Dear Clairbourn Families,
I have been reflecting on what makes our Clairbourn family so strong when the rest of the world seems so divided.
I think the answer lies in our approach to problems so beautifully expressed in a line from a Morning Assembly hymn. It says quite simply, “Shepherd, show me how to go.”
Members of this school community, with their focus on ethics and character education, are in the habit of being mindful about how we approach our problems, be they social, academic, or community-related, to make sure we're meeting a spiritual standard to show heart and care for one another.
I think it is a wonderful way to approach our current political environment, and really any situation. It certainly doesn’t suggest that we all need to take the same steps or vote for the same person or party. However, we all have an obligation within our community, our country, and our world to treat everyone, even those who hold a different view, with respect, kindness, and love!
How we go about our interactions is far more important than what we may disagree about. Together, we can handle any "what" if we all are conscious of our "how."
At Clairbourn, we are united by our common interest in the progress, learning, joy, and safety of the children. We are bonded together over shared acts of kindness like supporting the CFA events or fundraising efforts of the Student Council. We are focused as a community on our common humanity and our shared values.
And most importantly, we are joined in our common mission to Create Scholars and Leaders with Heart! These things bring us together and are a model for the world at large, so keep it up Clairbourn! I am grateful to have such a supportive and committed community.

Surprise "Clue" Activity
Mystery Solved by Clever Middle-Schoolers
Our heart-filled teachers went to great lengths to ensure Middle School students had stimulating activities to enjoy on October 30th (the day Clairbourn usually has Halloween activities and a costume parade).
One of the activities was a surprise Clue murder mystery game. Through a clever use of the Zoom platform, teachers devised a way for students to play along virtually and solve the crime!
When they logged in for class, Mrs. Barker explained that normal school work was off the table because the students needed to solve a murder in the Manor House! She shared the rules of the game and instructed them to visit a variety of teacher-specific Zoom rooms, where they met Clue Characters played by the middle school teachers. While there, students looked for clues to uncover who they thought might be the murderer and determine the type of weapon that was used. Two rounds of the game were played. Once the students got the hang of it, they really got into the action, and then enjoyed some post-game Kahoots quizzes later in the day.
Recharge Your Studies!
YouTube Study Sessions Enhance Focus
Could your student use a helping hand with focusing on work? Sometimes it's no fun to study in silent solitude. But, thanks to a recommendation from 7th-grader Michelle Y. and some links provided by teacher Mrs. Barker, we've got a great tip to share! Make YouTube Study Sessions part of your student's study routine. You can choose videos with ambient sounds, music, or people "working with you." You can combine it with the Pomodoro timing technique if the video has no timer. (Unless you are a YouTube subscriber, ads will interrupt the video session from time to time.)
Here are some example study session videos:
More About the Pomodoro Technique
Chunk your work time into 25 minute sessions and then take a break, starting again after a five minute break. Learn more here.

Staying Healthy: Get Moving!
Physical movement can help you cope with what you can't control.
Psychcentral.com recently shared research that, "individuals who participate in a regular yoga practice are better able to manage strong emotions....Also, moving our bodies promotes blood circulation and releases tension, which is exactly what you need to do when overwhelmed by life circumstances.”
