Head of School Update

Important Dates and Send Your Questions

Dear Clairbourn Families,

We are off to a great start on quarter two!  I want to let you know of a few calendar items coming up. We are conducting a Teacher Professional Development Day meeting on
Monday, November 2 with no school that day. Also, Wednesday, November 11 is a Parent Teacher Conference Day and there will be no school.

I know that some families have questions about remote learning or our plans for returning to campus.  I’d like to invite you to ask as many questions as you like using this form. I will try to answer as many as possible each week in this email.

Halloween is coming and the Student Council has some fun and exciting activities for the students. I can’t wait to see the creative ideas for costumes in our digital costume parade!  As always, any photos submitted for the parade should be “school friendly.”  This means we are celebrating creativity, fun, and childlike joy, so please no blood, gore, or very scary costumes for school.  I also encourage creative ways to celebrate the occasion while still following the guidelines from the Health Department.  We need to do our part to keep the community safe.

Go Dodgers!

October Reading Challenge

We are a little more than half way through our October Reading Challenge (which is to join together as a community in reading for 20 minutes every day during the month of October). Let’s keep going and get our kids excited about reading. Do you have a reluctant reader? Here’s a fun way to encourage younger kids to read everyday.

Student Council Halloween Activities

Costume Parade with Candy and Card Drive

Student Council has been putting together a series of events for Halloween.

Hello Clairbourn parents! We thought it would be fun if the students post a picture of themselves in their costumes on Vidigami for a virtual Halloween parade! We would like for the pictures to be posted on Vidigami by October 28.
On October 30, students can come to their Zoom classes in their costumes. If that seems too much, students can wear any Halloween accessories they like or Halloween colors. Dressing up is optional.

We're also collecting student-made Thank You Cards for service members and first responders.
Students should only sign their first names, and they should not write any date (so that Operation Gratitude can use them at any time).

Finally, we are hosting our Annual Candy Drive for Operation Gratitude from November 3 to November 6.
If you have any leftover Halloween candy, please feel free to drop it off in transportation between the hours of 9am and 3pm. The cards can also be dropped off at the same time and place.

Thank you and Happy Halloween!

Staying Connected

First Grade Plans Exciting Gatherings!

Parent Anne Gifford Ewing wrote into the eCourier to share that the Grade 1 Virtual Fall Parent Party on Zoom, this past Thursday night, was a hit! It was lovely to meet parents of the new children in the 1st Grade, and to see some familiar faces. They also spent time discussing these topics:

What We Love About Clairbourn:
  • Clairbourn's emphasis on teaching ethics.
  • Clairbourn's focus on qualities, thoughts and behavior, and not just achievements.
  • Clairbourn's loving atmosphere.
  • Clairbourn's excellent teachers.
  • Intimate enough setting that everyone on campus knows who your kids are.
  • Opportunities to build confidence and skills, specifically by participation in public speaking and sports.
  • Great leadership team.
  • Impressive pivoting to virtual teaching.
  • Kids all seem really happy.
What We're Enjoying During the Pandemic:
  • More time with our kids--understanding them more.
  • Reading books aloud as a family.
  • Patronizing local bakeries to have tea parties at home.
  • Having a dinner picnic in a park.
  • Getting fancy takeout on weekends from cool restaurants where you could never usually get a reservation or driving downtown or to the West Side for takeout with no traffic!
  • Reviewing all the Seesaw posts at the end of the day as a family.
  • Putting takeout on your nice china dishes!
  • Doing art, watching Disney +, pumpkin carving, and baking.
Their Upcoming Grade-Level Party Plans Include:
  • 30 Minute Dance Parties every other Friday afternoon starting at 3:00pm. The next Dance Party will be this Friday, October 23 with Halloween dance music, and children are welcome to wear costumes to dance!

  • Small-Group Lunch-Togethers via Zoom every other Friday from 11:45-12:15.

  • A Grade 1 Halloween Party: Friday, October 30 at 3:00pm on a special Zoom link, with RSVP required. Children are welcome to wear costumes and there will be home-delivered party supplies.

Student Accomplishment

Coco Z. Hones Her Artistic Talents

What An Artist! Coco Z., in Grade 8, has put her extra indoor time to good use and recently created many masterpieces in mediums such as oil painting, pen and ink drawing, sketching, and more. She showed talent and an interest in art at an early age and has been drawing by herself since she was six years old. She started formal art training in 2016 at Art Planet art school in San Gabriel. Here are a few samples of Coco's recent artwork! Enjoy!

Giving & Heart:

Attorney, business executive and civil rights activist Vernon Jordan believes giving back must be in our hearts.

"You are where you are today because you stand on somebody’s shoulders. And wherever you are heading, you cannot get there by yourself. If you stand on the shoulders of others, you have a reciprocal responsibility to live your life so that others may stand on your shoulders. We exist temporarily through what we take, but we live forever through what we give."

The Power of Pets: Health Benefits of Human Interaction

The National Institutes of Health reports that, "Interacting with animals has been shown to decrease levels of cortisol (a stress-related hormone) and lower blood pressure. Other studies have found that animals can reduce loneliness, increase feelings of social support, and boost your mood."

Cool Kit Helps Kids Learn About Vet Science

"Discover the important work that veterinarians do through hands-on play with a KiwiCo Veterinarian Starter Kit. Includes a stethoscope, syringe, an x-ray lightbox, and other handy vet tools. Explore animal anatomy. Learn to read cat and dog body language.

Grade 6 Wind Lab Produces Poetic Insights
Student Kelson J. brought something extra to this science lab with the poetic way he recorded his wind observations in his lab journal.

"When I walk outside,..for some reason the wind stops altogether like the wind gods are holding their breath. I noticed that, once in a while, a dead leaf would fall down and the winds would blow it around and it would sound like a knife scratching on metal. I think that the wind, when it was blowing, sounded like leaves rustling around and sometimes there was a bird’s cry in it."

Grade K Studies Forces
In a "Creative Engineering Design Challenge" students were asked to build and test a ramp capable of using gravity to power a toy car with enough speed to travel all the way along and past a length of string included in their kits.

French Class Omelets

Grade 8 French students, exploring French culture, dove into cooking. They were asked to experiment with preparing a French omelet. It is a great introductory dish as it easy to make, requires little materials and ingredients, and it is oh-so-tasty!
