From Head of School
Onward and Upward, Cougars!
Dear Clairbourn Families,
The excitement has been mounting for our Book Fair, Reading is Out of This World! The astronaut and balloons are a great way to get us all excited for reading. Ms. Mize and the CFA Book Fair Chairs, Fiona Zhang and Lisa Li have been hard at work distributing shirts and masks, organizing volunteers, and preparing decorations to make the theme exciting for the students. I can't wait for the big opening! Watching the students get excited about new books is always a highlight of the year. Thanks to everyone working on the Book Fair for making this a great event for our students.
Many people have asked about the COVID testing requirements. At this time, Clairbourn is doing weekly surveillance testing of all students on Mondays. If your child misses a Monday when we are testing for an appointment or non-illness reason, they will need to do a PCR test and report the results to Mr. Jubilado by Thursday, but may attend school while waiting for the results. This is the same procedure for all of the students being tested at school. They all continue to attend while waiting for the results. Any student who stays home or is sent home with symptoms consistent with COVID must have a PCR test with a negative result BEFORE returning to school. We appreciate everyone supporting the safety and wellness of the community.
Some parents have asked about the state mandate for the COVID-19 vaccine for students. At this time, it looks like all students 12 years or older will be required to be vaccinated by January 3. That timeline may change if the state makes a change or the predicted timeline for full approval changes, but that is the current estimate. If your child is eligible we encourage you to start the process before the winter break.
Lastly, another big shout out to the Student Council for making this a great Red Ribbon Week with theme days to remind us of being healthy and safe. Well done!
Amy Patzlaff, Ed.D.

Quarter One Highlights
Clairbourn Students Are Resilient And Thrive For A Successful Start To The New School Year!
It’s hard to believe quarter one of this new school year is complete. Our teachers were busy planning a rigorous curriculum, making sure the classrooms were ready, while finding new ways to engage and motivate the students. Our Cougars can certainly feel the energetic vibes from our staff because, “I can’t wait for school, EVERYDAY!” quoted a second grader. Here are a few highlights from quarter one!

Middle School Drop and Build Day
This month’s Halloween-themed Drop Everything & Build Challenge in the Middle School was spider parachutes. The students were tasked with building parachutes for their plastic spiders out of coffee filters, yarn, and tape. After testing their initial designs, the students worked to optimize their designs and then attempted to land their spiders closest to the landing zone. Perseverance and teamwork were on display throughout the challenge. During the final round of testing, the students cheered on their classmates, showing that encouragement is a great way to show heart. Congratulations, Cougars!
The overall winners in Middle School were 6th graders Wesley C. and Simon L. The 6th grade runners-up were Akira T. and Matteo Y. The 7th grade winners were Rogan W. and Jack Z., and the runners-up were Zoe H. and Fredric S. In the 8th grade, the winners were Yuqi F. and Joshua S., and the runners-up were Nick N. and Michael Y.

Operation Gratitude
Operation Gratitude is one of the largest and most effective nonprofits in the country to support our military and first responders. Every year we have a candy drive for Operation Gratitude and we collect extra Halloween candy to donate to the military.
We will be collecting extra Halloween candy at transportation the week after Halloween. There will be a box to drop off the candy from November 1 through November 4.
Halloween candy is a nice donation for military members and first responders because it reminds them of home since they might not get to spend the holidays with their family and friends. Thank you for helping us support Operation Gratitude! |
