1st Academic Quarter - Growth & Progress

Dear Clairbourn Families,

This Friday ends our first quarter for the 2020-21 school year.  It makes me so excited to see the progress and learning that has been happening in the classes. I mentioned last week some of the activities, but I continue to be impressed.

I have seen science experiments, art projects, engineering builds, a growing understanding of the workings of our government, literature combined with baking, writing activities, and beautiful geometry constructions. This quarter has been full of growth and progress. I am so grateful for the dedication, innovation, and creativity of our wonderful teachers. They are impressive!

A big thanks goes to the Student Council for contributing the Hispanic Heritage Month videos to the Morning Assembly. It is great to see contributions to our society from a variety of people. We all have something of value to share, and it is great to acknowledge that.

I hope each of you are filling up your gratitude pumpkins. Mine is getting pretty full. I have one at home and one at school so I can find room to write down all of the things for which I am grateful. There is so much, and the Clairbourn Family is high on my list.

Happy end of the quarter!  Go Dodgers!

Grade 6 Science Studies

Wind Lab Produces Poetic Insights

6th-graders in Guen Vinnedge's middle school science class spent last weekend observing the wind each morning and afternoon to determine if there is a difference between the two times of day. (Spoiler alert, there is!) The sea breeze becomes noticeable in the afternoons in Southern California.

Student Kelson J. brought something extra to this science lab with the poetic way he recorded his wind observations in his lab journal.

"When I walk outside, I feel like sometimes the wind is going east, north, and south. Sometimes the wind comes as a gentle push, but I think that it mainly comes from the east and north. It’s kinda hard to tell which way the trees are blowing but I think that it is mainly swaying from the east to west. For some reason the wind stops altogether like the wind gods are holding their breath. I noticed that, once in a while, a dead leaf would fall down and the winds would blow it around and it would sound like a knife scratching on metal. I found out something by standing behind the house waiting for the wind. I felt like the winds were going over the house and blowing on me, though it could just be that the wind was blowing in a different direction. I think that the wind, when it was blowing, sounded like leaves rustling around and sometimes there was a bird’s cry in it."

Push/Pull STEM Lab

Kindergarteners Learn about Forces

Force is what moves things, and Kindergarteners learned about push and pull forces by conducting at-home and whole-class Zoom experiments on how things move when they are pushed and pulled. Students were asked to predict and note the changes in force they needed to apply depending on the type of surface over which the object was pushed or pulled.

They also read "Construction Builders" about a group that builds a big road, and then discussed how engineers design and build ramps that use the force of gravity to move things down a slope.

Next, Kindergarteners experienced the "Creative Engineering Design Challenge" where they were asked to build and test a ramp capable of using gravity to power a toy car with enough speed to travel all the way along and past a length of string included in their kits. Students used Seesaw to submit videos of their cars going down the ramp and explained their designs and the choices involved. Check out a few video snippets of their learning process:

You Can Make an Omelet!

French Students Show How its Done

Salut tout le monde! Grade 8 French students have embarked on a journey to the heart of French culture: cooking! They were asked to experiment with preparing a French omelet. It is a great introductory dish as it easy to make, requires little materials and ingredients, and it is oh-so-tasty!

Materials:
Skillet (about 7-9" at bottom), Whisk, Fork or chopsticks for stirring, Preparing bowl, Warm plate,

Ingredients:
2-3 eggs, Teaspoon water (optional), Salt & pepper, to taste
Tablespoon butter (salted or unsalted), Herbs (such as basil, parsley or thyme to taste)

This omelet is different from one you might order in an American restaurant, which is actually an egg soufflé. This omelet is light, quickly cooked on high heat and makes for a perfect snack or light meal.

Inspired to make your own? Watch this additional video by Julia Child on how to prepare this French staple.

Photographer Tells Stories of Place

Sinziana Velicescu, Class of 2003, is an award-winning photographer based in Los Angeles, California.
She is a graduate of the University of Southern California with a B.A. in Comparative Literature and Film. Her photography explores human intervention with nature in landscapes that have undergone political, social, or environmental change. Appropriating architectural vocabulary, Velicescu disrupts everyday topography via careful composition to develop an elegant and humorous narrative to tell the story of place. Velicescu's award winning series, “On The Periphery,” has been shown in galleries internationally...

Thoughts on Being a Leader:

As students learn to lead, they will quickly discover leadership positions attract lots of criticism, and it is important to know how to handle that type of attention. Is it constructive criticism designed to help, which comes from a place of love, or it it destructive and designed to knock down our best efforts? Take a tip from Oscar, Tony, and Emmy award-winning actress Viola Davis who has learned to find her strength!

"I don’t have any time to stay up all night worrying about what someone who doesn’t love me has to say about me." - Viola Davis (Oprah's Oscar Special)
