Head of School Update

Remote Learning and County Status

Dear Clairbourn Families,

Can you believe we are almost to the end of the first quarter?  I am excited about the real learning taking place in our remote classrooms. I saw STEM activities, reading work, literature analysis, problem solving in math, and social studies lessons all happening in new and powerful ways. I also saw great physical activities, language lessons, art projects, music practice, and coding happening each week.

On top of that, the student council has found ways to bond us together as a community in fun ways with their Sports Day (GO DODGERS!) and Disney Day.

As we wrap up this week and head into the final week of the first quarter, I encourage all of you to take advantage of the school holiday on Monday, October 12. Get off of the computers and do something as a family.  Maybe it is pulling out a board game or puzzle, maybe it is going for a socially-distanced walk in a park, maybe it is doing a project or craft together, or maybe just going for a drive to try a new spot for lunch. Make use of the time to recharge and refresh so the last week can be productive and happy.

Some of you have probably heard the news which says that Los Angeles County was ready to move to the next tier in the schools reopening protocol, but then the following week it moved back to the purple tier. We are also watching the statistics and having regular conversations with the health departments to ensure we are ready to open when the time comes.

You may have also heard that there is now a waiver process for students in TK-2nd grade (TK means transitional Kindergarten) to get permission to come to campus. They are limiting this option to 30 schools a week and there are thousands of schools in LA County. They are prioritizing schools who serve a high portion of lower income students because their families have fewer resources to provide stable internet, food, and other needed resources for a successful school experience.

This means that it could take more than a year for us to get permission if we rely on a waiver process. So our best opportunity for resuming on campus instruction will be for the county's numbers to decrease for a sustained period of time.

Until this is a possibility, we will continue to provide the most robust remote learning option possible. We also encourage everyone to do their part in keeping the community safe by following protocols, maintaining good handwashing hygiene, wearing a mask, and maintaining social distance when out and about.  We can all make a difference.

Happy long weekend.
Amy Patzlaff, Ed.D.

Secrets to Productivity:
Finding the Hours to Make it Happen

Entrepreneur, 3x TED speaker, and author Derek Sivers explains how  to accomplish what matters:

"When you experience someone else’s genius work, a little part of you feels, 'That’s what I could have, would have, and should have done!'
Someone else did it. You didn’t. They fought the resistance. You gave in to distractions. They made it top priority. You said you’d get to it some day. They took the time. You meant to.

When this happens, you can take it two ways: You could let that part of you give up. 'Oh well. Now I don’t need to make that anymore.' Or you could do something about that jealous pain. Shut off your phone, kill the distractions, make it top priority, and spend the time.

It takes many hours to make what you want to make. The hours don’t suddenly appear. You have to steal them from comfort." (Source: James Clear newsletter)

Thoughts on Heart

Having heart can mean having confidence or courage - it can be a willingness to try new things, take a risk, and grow.

"Lack of confidence kills more dreams than lack of ability. Talent matters—especially at elite levels—but people talk themselves out of giving their best effort long before talent becomes the limiting factor. You're capable of more than you know. Don't be your own bottleneck."
