Our Code of Ethics & Political Discussion

Dear Clairbourn Families,

As we launch into election season, we all need to be aware of our roles in maintaining civility in discourse, cultivating critical thinking, and maintaining our ethical standards. This is a challenging task in any election year, but even more so now as the country seems to be quite polarized and divided.

As you know, the challenge of maintaining respectful discourse is heightened in the discussion of topics that are highly emotional or charged in some way. As you navigate these waters in your homes, it might be helpful to keep the Clairbourn Code of Ethics in mind and help the children do the same.

Let respect, responsibility, honesty, citizenship, and spirituality lead the way. Each individual has political views, informed by personal experiences, information gathered from a variety of sources, and our own visceral responses to what we see. There are certain topics that illicit a strong response in each of us, sometimes a highly emotional response. This is completely normal for people who care.

I challenge you to express these views and feel things passionately while maintaining a language of respect and civility as you share your personal views in your homes. Your children are watching, listening, and learning from you. Help them to understand WHY you take a certain position. Help them understand WHY others may feel differently. Help them understand WHY you value your sources for election information rather than social medial posts. Help them to support their opinions with facts. Help them examine comments they hear with a discerning ear. Help them understand the benefits of having conversations to understand multiple perspectives.

In class, we endeavor to have our students express themselves clearly and thoughtfully. We want them to think critically and work to understand each other. We honor the diverse views of our families, and challenge the students to express these views with respect. When parents consistently model this at home, it makes it much easier for the students to carry this style of discourse to the classroom.

We know that the conversations will not be perfect, but we will work to maintain civility and respect in our classes. To me, the Clairbourn Code of Ethics is a great filter for the whole political scene. If we all express our thoughts with RESPECT, share only that which is HONEST, act in ways that are RESPONSIBLE, behave as good CITIZENS, and ground ourselves in SPIRITUALITY, we will all be better for it!

The Clairbourn family is not affiliated with a political party, but we stand firmly for principles in our Code of Ethics!  It is nice to have something that we can all agree on and support together.

CFA Updates

News from CFA President Connie Kim

Get Ready for Fall Events / Activities
Dear Clairbourn Families, I hope you are settling in well into your virtual school routines and enjoying the first few days of fall. Traditionally, fall is an exciting and busy time of the school year and it will be no different while we are away from campus.

For the month of October, I encourage all of our families to participate in the following upcoming CFA events and activities.

Grade-Level Parent Parties

Each class is hosting a Parent Party to help families connect and to get to know each other outside of the classroom. I encourage our families to join in on the virtual parties and have some fun. Room parents will be sending you information (if they haven’t already). Please be sure to reach out to the room parent (using contact information found in the CougarNet Parent Directory), should you have any questions.

2020-2021 Room Parents:
KA – Summer Zhang and Christina Huang
KB – Diana Balmori
Grade 1 – Anne Ewing
Grade 2 – Cathy Lee
Grade 3 – Ting Sung and Lisa Li
Grade 4 – Victoria Musuta
Grade 5 – Amber Pollard Wilson
Grade 6 – Jonathan Lim
Grade 7 – Patrick Toche
Grade 8 – Michelle Zhang

Pizza Night Fundraiser - 10/09 4-8pm

Dine out at Tony’s Pizza and raise money for Clairbourn. Tony’s Pasta Special Lunches are a favorite at Clairbourn. The CFA has partnered with Tony’s Pizza in San Marino for our first dine-out fundraiser. Dine out on October 9 from 4pm-8pm and Tony’s Pizza will donate 20% of your order to Clairbourn. Be sure to mention Clairbourn or present the fundraiser flyer when ordering.

The Book Fair is Coming!

Save These Dates - October 19 to October 31. Clairbourn’s Book Fair is back (virtually)!  This year’s Book Fair will be online and, as always, the CFA plans to make it a fun and exciting event for our families. The Virtual Book Fair, with the help of Scholastic Books, will include Clairbourn’s own online store, virtual store walk-throughs, parent read-alouds and more. Be sure to check the weekly E-Courier for more information about the upcoming Book Fair. We can’t wait to “see” you at the Fair.

October Reading Challenge

To kick off our Book Fair month, the CFA challenges our community to join together in reading for 20 minutes every day during the month of October. This will be a great opportunity to get our children to dive into a new book and to get the whole family reading every day.  Perhaps, you might even consider a reward for the family after completing the 30-day reading challenge (sounds like a good reason for a trip to get ice cream). Here are some resources outlining the importance of family reading:

As always, thank you for supporting the CFA and our school!

Warmly,
Connie Kim, CFA President
