Stepping Into The Festive Fall Season

Dear Clairbourn Families,

As we dive into October tomorrow, I generally start thinking about fall. I think about the joy around reading generated by the Book Fair, the creativity that goes along with Halloween festivities, the gratitude focus around Thanksgiving, and the crisp, fresh weather that we may eventually get (I hope).

I love watching the CFA leadership working with parent volunteers on events and activities. It brings something special to the day when we see the parents volunteering at special lunch days and I am looking forward to seeing even more at the Book Fair! I have seen several new parents volunteering alongside the many familiar faces! It is a great
way to get to know other parents from your class and those from other classes as well. When I helped one student out of the car this morning, they asked their parent if they were going to be at Panda Day today. When the parent nodded, the student responded with a big, "YESSSS!"  It makes a difference to them.

As you think about Halloween for your children, please remember the focus at school is creativity and joy, so please avoid weapons and scary costumes. Think about costumes that allow for the child's mask to stay in place and not be impeded by any part of the costume. Also think about costumes your children can manage on their own. We will be doing an outdoor parade for each other with lots of photos for parents to see.

Also be sure to read the uniform information on the right. We continue to wait for uniform backorders to arrive. It looks like some of the orders may not arrive until November. So try to be as uniform similar as possible.

Thanks for your support and participation in our community!

Middle School Barbie Bungee Experiment

Last week, in Mrs. Messler's Middle School algebra class, students used their linear regression skills to design something fun — the Barbie Bungee experiment!
Students were challenged to create a bungee line for Barbie that would give her the most thrilling, yet safe, fall from a height of 2 meters. Middle Schoolers collected data, learned how to plot the data on a coordinate plane, wrote linear equations to approximate the relationship, looked for the best fit linear equation, and discussed what slope and y-intercept mean in this context.

Student Council

We continue to honor National Hispanic American Heritage Month. This week, we talked about Sonia Sotomayor and Sofia Vergara.

Sonia Sotomayor | Puerto Rican American Judge

Nominated by President Barack Obama on May 26, 2009, Sonia Sotomayor became the first Latina Supreme Court Justice in U.S. history. She received a bachelor's degree from Princeton and a law degree from Yale. Managing two languages at top schools wasn't always easy but she was determined to push herself. She has been a part of 3,000 Supreme Court decisions. We are grateful she has inspired so many others to follow their dream.

Sofia Vergara |Columbian American Actress

Sofia Vergara is a Colombian actress who was born to a large family. She started acting at 25 and gained much success from her role in the TV show Modern Family (2009-2020). She has won many awards and created a foundation to help struggling families cope with cancer. Her foundation fills the buckets of many people who have to live with or have loved ones with cancer. She demonstrates generosity and giving back with heart.

Middle School Wellness Focus

On Oct. 5 and 7, the Middle School, during their Advisory period, will be hearing talks from Dr. Marguery Lyvers, a licensed clinical psychologist, on how to manage stress, anxiety, and the pressure to do well at school and home.

Wellness Focus for Middle School —Parent Edition: Parenting your stressed-out Middle Schooler.

Dr. Lyvers will also give a talk for Middle School parents on the evening of Oct. 7, 6-7 pm, virtually on a Zoom meeting.

Parents of Middle School students are encouraged to attend the meeting to learn about ways they can help support their children as they navigate the pressures of being a teenager and the expectations both school and home place on them.

School Uniform

Many Lands' End items are still on backorder until November. Students should wear something similar to the Clairbourn uniform, such as wearing khaki or navy pants or shorts and the right color polo from other sources as a temporary fix.

We know jackets and outerwear can be more expensive, so students can wear uniform colors outerwear. If it is not possible, then you can wear whatever you have for now.

We intend to fully enforce the uniform policy in January once everything is in stock, so plan ahead for winter and order outerwear now.

Clairbourn Alphabet

Clairbourn faculty employ many strategies to help students discover talents in academics, athletics, the arts, entrepreneurship, music, and so much more. We are Scholars and Leaders with Heart!
