School Year Preparation

Key Information for the Start of School

Dear Clairbourn Family,
We are getting close to starting our new year.  By now you have seen the schedules for the specialists (elementary) or the class schedules (middle school) if you have checked in CougarNet. You may have wondered about the way the elementary schedule is showing.

Because CougarNet likes to have specific times assigned to classes, we put the elementary schedule as 9-3 with a lunch break.  This allows the teachers to have flexibility to schedule their class sessions and small group sessions as needed.  So don’t worry, your child won’t be online the whole day.  The teachers are thoughtfully planning for both live classes and non-tech activities for each of their classes.

Uniforms are not required in remote, but we want everyone to wear the Clairbourn shirts on Fridays to build community.  Please do not join a class in pajamas!

We are preparing to distribute the school supplies to the students and can’t wait to start the year! What supplies do you need to provide?  I suggest large quantities of patience, stacks of excitement, piles of flexibility, and loads of love.  With this already stocked up, you will be in good shape for the year.  If you need to start stockpiling these, don’t worry, they are never back-ordered and are always available for distribution.  See you all next week to pick up your other school supplies!

School Supply Pickup:

Pickup Schedule by Grade:

We are excited to see everyone for student supply pickup days. Please plan to come at the time listed below.  For those with more than one child, you have the option to come more than once so your child can see their teacher.

If you would rather do only one pickup, you can get supplies for all of your children at one time. The classroom teachers are helping with the distribution of materials so they can say hi to their new students! Please keep health and safety in mind by staying in your car and wearing a mask.

When you pull in, the teacher can load the bag into your trunk to do a contact-free delivery.

Health Notices

Please Complete Magnus Health Forms

It is vital that the school has current health information about each child. All families must complete their Magnus Health Forms and submit your child’s immunization records before school begins. This is a State Law. Please use this CougarNet link for Magnus Health in the Resource Board section to provide your information. If you need help, please contact Nick Jubilado in the health office at njubilado@clairbourn.org, or at extension 117.

How To Wear A Mask

To keep our students safe, Clairbourn's Director of Enrollment Management & Early Childhood Education Karen Paciorek recommends that parents watch, along with their children, the following how-to video on mask wearing and handling for kids:

Join the New Virtual Cougar Corner

Dear Clairbourn Families,

It's me again! CFA President Connie Kim with some exciting news. Did you know that the CFA has a New Facebook Group Page?

Join the group Cougar Corner to stay connected with current Clairbourn parents. (The real Cougar Corner is a snack shop on campus, run by the CFA, where parents and students meet before and after school to socialize.)

Join Cougar Corner on Facebook

As we begin the school year remotely, this virtual and private Facebook group will be a new way for parents to get to know each other, share helpful tips and ideas on home-learning, post inspiring updates about themselves and their children, and share anything else that inspires and encourages each other. Let’s all join in to keep our Clairbourn community vibrant!

#ClairbournRocks! Help Spread Positivity and Kindness

Painted rocks have become a viral trend recently because it’s a fun and easy way for families to spread kindness and positivity into their communities. The idea is to paint rocks with inspirational messages or cheerful paintings and hide them in the community for others to find.

For the month of September, let’s sprinkle some kindness, positivity and school spirit throughout our Claribourn community. Paint a rock with a positive message or cheerful painting and post a picture of it on your social media page with the hashtag #clairbournrocks! Then, leave it somewhere for another person to find and enjoy.

Thanks for your participation!
Connie Kim, CFA president

Supporting Parents

Nine Things that Matter - But Only One That Truly Counts!

Head of School Dr. Amy Patzlaff with students from the Fall of 2019

As the Head of School, caring for our parents, in addition to students and staff, is always on my mind. Recently, an in-depth article from DevelopmentalScience.com caught my eye called, “Pandemic 2020: Will the Kids Be All Right? Lessons on Parenting from 100 Years of Crises.” It contains a lot of helpful explanations and advice for parents dealing with their fears about how to raise children successfully in the midst of so much uncertainty.

Can children go on to lead successful lives and flourish in the face of educational disruptions and great adversity? Research shows that, while there are nine important elements that offer full coverage for children's wellbeing, the real key to favorable outcomes boils down to one thing, and the good news is, it’s you!

  1. One stable adult matters. What kids need most to adapt well in adversity is “at least one stable, caring adult, someone who provides a secure psychological container and a scaffold for growth.” 1

  2. Remaining calm matters. “If their primary adult is calm, a child feels reassured. But if their adult is upset, the child feels unsafe, and their body and brain go into threat mode. And when the threat system is on too long without relief, physical and mental health problems can result.”
Inspiration From Alumni

An Important Message of Pandemic Hope from Clairbourn Alumna Tiffany Chang

Tiffany Chang, from Clairbourn’s Class of 2018, sees the opportunities embedded in every crisis.

She credits Clairbourn for the optimistic thoughts that inspired an award-winning video she made for the Center for Future Global Leaders (CFGL) Young Artist Competition. She says, “I will always be grateful to Clairbourn as the school has always taught me to look at the positive side of every situation and to stay optimistic even during the most difficult times. I will never forget the important life lessons Clairbourn instilled in me.”

Her “Leaders of Tomorrow Video During the Pandemic” project was designed for parents and students, and reveals a path out of hopelessness by making a point of looking at the brighter side of the stay-at-home-order and disruptions to normal routines.  Read the Full Blog Post
