Message To The School Community

Dear Clairbourn Families,

We are in the home stretch. The year is wrapping up and we all have a lot to be proud of. We have demonstrated grit, determination, and resilience as a community. I hope you have been enjoying the 8th grade videos. They have great things to say and have learned so much over their years here.  I always love to hear them speak. We will have three more in the coming days! I look forward to seeing everyone during the yearbook distribution next week. Remember, it is important for everyone to stay in their vehicles in order to comply with county regulations. See you soon!

Return And Collect Your Items!

In order to safely distribute and collect items to and from everyone, we need to follow a schedule where families plan to arrive during an appointed time. Bags labeled with the child’s name will be ready at transportation and will include their yearbook (barring shipping issues) and personal belongings. Parents should bring back any library books, instruments, school owned-technology (including charging cords), and school-owned supplies to drop off at school at their appointed times if possible.

Parents and students should NOT exit their cars, but should drive through to the transportation curb where we can transfer the items.

Caring For Our Families

Have you ever wondered what Clairbourn’s Leadership Team members, Dr. Patzlaff, Janet Taylor, and Karen Paciorek, as well as the teachers, and even our own parents are reading and watching on the subjects of education and raising children? As summer approaches, it is a great time for parents to find out. Throughout the school year, curated and inspiring content is published for our parents in the Parenting Partner Playlist Group on Clairbourn’s CougarNet intranet website!

Imagine yourself, over the next eight weeks, poolside—the picture of relaxation—but you’re actually using that time to become a super parent, checking in on what education experts are saying, getting inspiration from research, and learning about strategies for raising children.  As your children grow, you’ll be one step ahead of them knowing what they need to thrive!

Here are the current resources to explore:
(If you have a favorite video, article, or book that you think should be shared with your fellow parents, email the information to info@clairbourn.org and put “Parenting Partner Playlist” in the email’s subject title. If you need help finding this content in CougarNet, see the instructions at the end of this article.)

Annabelle C. Is A Stand-Out Programer

In February, sixth-grader Annabelle C. took a Scratch Programming for Middle School Students Class from the Center for Talented Youth (CTY). At the completion of the class she was commended for her hard work and dedication to learning to program and for her top performance on the quizzes, assignments, final project, and final exam. Her programming activities included making the letters of her name appear as different-colored sprites that moved around on the screen, a car project programmed to change not only color but also pattern, and an advertisement project for the Scratch Tours. For her final project, Annabelle made a challenging game where the user controls the Scratchy trying to get gems while avoiding the balloons and birds. Way to go Annabelle!

Marc C. Masters Math And Coding

In April, Marc C. in fourth grade took a Math and Codes class from the Center for Talented Youth (CTY). His teacher commended him for his qualities of perseverance, his practice habits, wisdom to ask for help from the instructor when needed, and his communication skills to deepen his understanding of the material. All of these worked together to earn him stand-out scores for the class. On the Final Exam, Marc had to decipher messages that were encrypted using the Caesar Cipher, Keyword Cipher, Vigenere Cipher, Affine Cipher, and Substitution Cipher. Marc accurately identified appropriate ciphers to use in specific situations when one would be required. He even completed two extra credit assignments where he had to decrypt a message that was encrypted with the Vigenere cipher and decrypt a message that was encrypted using the Affine cipher. Way to go Marc!

Learning How To Thrive In Hardship

According to an April 2020 Gallup poll, regarding the pandemic’s negative financial, physical, and mental effects, 23% of Americans reported feeling they were already in a mental health crisis or just a few weeks away from having one. An additional 19% felt they could hold out for a few months at best. This is not good news considering no one knows the duration of the pandemic or how long social distancing will need to be practiced.
