Message To The School Community

Dear Clairbourn Family,

Thanks go to the parents who already attended the first of two Town Hall Meetings (the second one is tonight at 7pm). Your questions provided a very helpful view into your concerns. We recorded the first session and we will have it ready to share with anyone who missed the meetings. A translation of the meeting is also in the works. Have a wonderful long weekend. Enjoy your time with family.

Watch The Pre-Taped Shakespeare Play

This Friday at 7pm, on our Facebook and YouTube channels, tune in for a live stream event where Clairbourn will be showing Act 1 of the Middle School Shakespeare Play As You Like It (27min). The Clairbourn After-School Thespians (C.A.S.T.) were planning to perform three live shows of Shakespeare's As You Like It in mid-March when the pandemic hit, and their shows were suddenly cancelled.  However, the final dress rehearsal was taped, so now everyone can experience the talents of our amazing Middle School students! This video is Act 1 of 5, so there is much more to come in this episodic series of live stream events.

Middle School French Class Made "Special" Cookies

Clément the sock puppet has been a regular fixture of Mademoiselle Barker's distance learning French Class videos. Together they recorded a segment about unicorns and how their rainbow-colored poop is magical! The lesson included a listening component, a speaking component (answering the question, "Est-ce que tu veux une licorne?"...Do you want a unicorn?), as well as a non-optional component of baking unicorn poop meringue cookies.  Watch the video, and then have some fun at home making these delightful treats!

Greek Myths Gone Wild!

Grade 6 English students followed in the footsteps of the Greek poets, Homer and Hesiod, by composing original myth stories of new "Greek" gods or goddess. In addition to naming their god/goddess, establishing his/her parentage, marital status, and symbology, their story needed a plot with a dilemma, a setting and supporting characters, and a moral point. Enjoy the following excerpt from Melanie Y.'s story, and read the rest of the Grade 6 stories here.

Epithymia And The Feather Of Dreams

Epithymia looked out her window, down at the mortal world. Although Mount Olympus was a beautiful place to live, she wished to go live among the people. Her parents, Elpis and Caerus did not want her to leave Olympus, despite her years of asking. However, Epithymia eventually decided she was mature enough to leave her parents and take care of herself. She did love her home and family, but was tired of living on the outskirts of Olympus as a barely known goddess with no reputation. On top of that, Epithymia was irritated by the antics of the gods ruling Olympus. Zeus was constantly angering Hera with his infidelities, and many of the other gods went into jealous rages over gifted mortals. Epithymia did not think it was fair for these humans to suffer horrible consequences over things they could not always control. She had a dream to leave Olympus and help the mortals live happier lives. (Melanie's story continues here.)

Learning How To Thrive In Hardship

According to an April 2020 Gallup poll, regarding the pandemic’s negative financial, physical, and mental effects, 23% of Americans reported feeling they were already in a mental health crisis or just a few weeks away from having one. An additional 19% felt they could hold out for a few months at best. This is not good news considering no one knows the duration of the pandemic or how long social distancing will need to be practiced.

Clairbourn has a long history of partnering with its parents to ensure that the whole school community remains healthy, strong, and productive even in times of difficulty. As an educational institution, it is natural to turn to the experts and discover what they have to teach us so we’re mentally equipped for tough times. The good news is, there are plenty of proven ways to bounce back from, or thrive in hardship and break away from frustration, depression, and burnout. The data shows we have the ability to control up to 40% of our happiness, and the strategies we can learn are surprisingly accessible and achievable!

What Is Gratitude Doing To You?

Gratitude is a word we hear a lot at Clairbourn School. It can be easy to feel satisfied about our community’s understanding and practice of gratitude. So why is it important to unpack it and take a deeper look?  Because this single word represents a much bigger concept than sincere thank-yous and heartfelt feelings.
