Head of School Update

Dear Clairbourn Families,

I want to give a huge cheer and show of appreciation to the three classes who have hit 100% participation in the Annual Fund! Way to go JPK, PK, and K!
I also want to give a cheer to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade who are at 90% or higher. There are many classes who are close to the high level of support shown by our youngest grades. It is not too late to lend your support to your child’s school. By contributing to our Annual Fund, your name is listed in the Annual Report as one of our supporters. Thanks to each of you who have contributed, and thanks to our Grade Level Captains and Annual Fund Chairs for their work in getting the message out!

Many parents have asked about our plans for next year.  There have been some very positive signs in recent weeks. Los Angeles County is expected to reach herd immunity this summer. Children ages 12 and up are now eligible for COVID vaccinations, and younger children will be eligible in the not too distant future. We strongly encourage everyone to take advantage of the vaccinations as they become available. All of this, along with information from health experts, have helped us with our decision about the 2021-22 school year.

We are pleased to announce all classes will be in person for the 2021-22 school year! There will not be an option for remote instruction unless a class is required to quarantine or another unexpected situation occurs. We will continue to follow all health department recommendations in order to mitigate risk and support our students. We expect to be able to offer before and after school care (likely with modifications), special lunch days, and many of the fun events that we all are yearning for. We also have learned a great deal in this year about what worked well in a remote format and may continue to offer some of the informational meetings in this way.

There are only 11 more school days and then our 8th graders graduate! Let’s make the best of our time remaining.

Class of 2021 Highlights

Virtual Zoology Trip

On Thursday, May 6, the 1st grade class had a guided virtual field trip to the Los Angeles Zoo.
The 1st grade class has been learning about animal groups for their science unit. As a part of the curriculum, the 1st grade class was joined by two docents from the LA Zoo to learn about different animals that call the zoo home. They talked about tigers, gorillas, koalas, and flamingos. Students engaged their scientific minds to observe and share their insights. They also asked many "I Wonder" questions. It was such a treat to visit the zoo virtually!

Wagons Ho! Third-Graders prepare to hit
The Oregon Trail!

Third-graders were surprised this week with a class adventure! Each student received a provision box and note from "Dusty" their trail guide (a.k.a. Teacher Mrs. Ward) informing them that the wagon train to Oregon is fixin' to leave in two-day's time and they need to get ready!  The provision box held Dusty's note, a model wagon kit with glue, a harmonica, beef jerky, a bandana, some games from that time period, and a journal to help them record their soon-to-be announced historical pioneer identities.

In previous years, the students would recreate the historical lives of the early American pioneers by dressing up in the clothing of the times, forming family units, making paper wagons, and having adventures around campus that mimic the real journey and daily activities of the Oregon Trail settlers. With some clever modifications, the activity is now adapted to a hybrid format. Have a nice journey, third graders!
