Head of School Update

Dear Clairbourn Families,

I am so excited to celebrate our 8th graders!  In a typical year we get to see their high school choices when the 8th graders wear sweatshirts from their chosen schools. This year, many are still wearing them with pride, but you don’t get to see them. Our 8th graders were accepted to the following schools (in alphabetical order): Alverno Heights, Brentwood School, Campbell Hall, Flintridge Preparatory School, Flintridge Sacred Heart, LaSalle College Preparatory, Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, Loyola High School, Maranatha High School, Mater Dei High School, Mayfield Senior School, Polytechnic School, Sequoyah High School, San Marino High School, St. Francis High School, Village Christian School, Webb Schools, and Westridge School for Girls.

In this group of students, seven of our students earned Honors at Entrance based on their academic record here at Clairbourn and admissions test scores. For many high schools, honors at entrance is determined by the ISEE or HSPT exam. Students who earn honor status score in the 90th percentile or higher overall. Wow! Additionally, students tested into Honors Biology, Honors Social Studies, Honors English, and many advanced and honors math levels. Our graduates are also recognized by the high schools for their participation at Clairbourn in drama, music, art, service, leadership, and athletics. Way to go, Class of 2021!

I am also incredibly grateful for our teachers, and Teacher Appreciation Week is a perfect time to share it. The success of the 8th grade class is a shared victory. There are lots of inputs along the way that make their journey productive, successful, and happy. This week we celebrate the teachers’ important role in this journey, guiding, counseling, encouraging, motivating, inspiring, and designing for maximum learning. Three cheers for our amazing faculty!!!

Fourth Grade Science - "Energy"

In 4th grade science last week, students engaged in a hands-on experiment to demonstrate their understanding of energy.
They constructed a model of how energy is stored, released and transferred by building a chain reaction machine. They first used their engineering skills to create ramps and levers to serve as the first two steps of the chain reaction. Then students got creative by setting up dominoes, adding tangrams and building blocks to serve as the next steps in the machine. Finally, they ended with a marble dropping in a cup to flip up their secret message!
