Head of School Update
Dear Clairbourn Families,
This week in our morning assemblies we have been hearing messages about our impact on others. The messages point out we often have no idea how much impact we are having on others. Sometimes a complete stranger sees us do something kind and it makes them smile. Sometimes we help a friend just when they were starting to feel down. It all makes a difference. I was chatting with a parent the other day who shared their positive experience with me. We were musing about how strange it is that the human tendency is to point out the negative things we see and let the good things go by without mention. Imagine what a difference we could all make if we took a few seconds or minutes to express our gratitude more regularly, point out the positive things we notice, and share the happy stories we hear or witness. We don’t have to imagine the difference, we can make the difference. Right now!
Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week and Clairbourn is saying a big THANK YOU to all of our amazing teachers by treating them to lunch each day. How can each student show their gratitude? It could be a simple note with a heart-felt message, a quick conversation to say thanks, a picture that is drawn just for them, or something else that is special to you. It doesn’t matter what you do, just be sure to say what is in your heart and share the gratitude. It makes a big difference!
I also want to share with you news about our new Communications Director. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration and Design from the Art Center College of Design. She has taught drawing and painting in both LAUSD and private art studios. She has worked as a graphic designer in advertising and marketing for several firms handling clients from various industries. She has worked as a design director managing a graphics department and supporting the marketing team. She has also established her own design studio helping government generating reports, assisting clients with branding needs and establishing their global marketing. Because she has the perfect skill set for our needs, Jeanette Zamora is our new Communications Director beginning May 1. Please join me in congratulating her on this new role.

End-of-the-Year Teacher Group Gifts
End-of-the-Year Teacher Group Gift Card Drive Runs May 3 to May 14
At the end of each school year, the CFA organizes a gift card drive to make it easier for parents to show their appreciation for our faculty and staff. This year, our teachers have done an outstanding job in navigating the challenges of virtual learning and seamlessly transitioning to in-person learning. Let’s show our teachers how grateful we are for all their efforts this year.
The End-of-the-Year Teacher Group Gift Card Drive allows you to participate in a group gift for your students’ teachers and also acknowledge the other members of the Clairbourn community who interact with your students outside of the classroom. Gift cards will be distributed to the teachers during the last week of May. Order form is due by May 14.
There're 2 ways to participate in the Teacher Group Gift:

Students Celebrating National Poetry Month
In our Middle School English classes, 6th - 8th grade students celebrated National Poetry Month by exploring many different aspects of poetry: voice, rhythm, rhyme, off-rhyme, repetition, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and more. Each student shared their perspectives honestly through their use of language, rhythm, and imagery. The above is a compilation of our students' work featuring a line from their poetry. Please enjoy their creativity!

Middle School Drop Everything & Build Challenge
In September, the first Drop Everything & Build Challenge of the school year in the Middle School was to build the tallest tower possible using 100 craft sticks and a roll of masking tape. This month, the Middle School students revisited the tallest tower challenge, and they were able to use any of the original materials from the Drop Everything & Build supply bags they have been using all year.
This time around, many students focused on building a steady base before extending as high as possible with craft sticks and straws. After 10 minutes to brainstorm and sketch, the students had 15 minutes to build. The towers ranged from a few inches to almost 6 feet tall! All students worked with perseverance and creativity to build the tallest tower they could, given the engineering constraints of materials and time.
Congratulations to the following winners:
8th grade Roomie and Overall: Vanessa H.
8th grade Zoomie: David L.
7th grade Roomie: Cole C.
7th grade Zoomie: Zachary Z.
6th grade Roomie: Mauricio R.
6th grade Zoomie: Susanna L.

Clairbourn Broadcast
Fifth to seventh grade students took a deep dive in the technology class. They not only did their own research and wrote up their own story, but they also put the whole newscast production together and starred as the anchor! This student-led project covered a wide range of interesting topics from Lego to the Great Wall and archaeological digs to historical sites. Students immersed themselves into this technology class and had such a blast learning. Good job, Cougars!

Skywatching: See the Pink Supermoon
The supermoon on April 26 was the first of the two supermoons for 2021. The term "supermoon" was coined by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979 and refers to either a new or full Moon that occurs when the Moon is within 90% of perigee, its closest approach to Earth.
