Fun-Raisers & Rocket Scientists
Dear Clairbourn Families,
This week has been another great one with students returning to campus and more laughter and joy ringing through the campus. We continue our commitment to the Zoomies and celebrate their grown and success as well!
Thank you to all of the families who avoided travel this break or who are quarantining now to keep our community protected. That kind of care for each other is what makes the community strong.
Speaking of a strong community, thanks to all who are participating in the Clairbourn Fitness Fun-Raiser! We are hoping to get every family registered and supporting their student. It is a really easy way to show support of the CFA, the students, and the school! A big shout-out to Taryn Johnson and Connie Kim for doing all of the leg-work to make this a success.
The rocket scientist quickly started working on the problem, “How do we strengthen the legs and modify them to absorb the impact successfully?” Lots of ideas started flowing about altering materials, structure, and form. Pretty soon, one of the scientists reframed the problem with a better question, “How do we land the equipment safely?” This change in the question opened them up to all kinds of possibilities beyond the three legs and allowed their thinking to expand.
They eventually decided on a simple airbag solution that would allow the equipment to be cushioned, bounce a few times, and then come safely to rest. What a difference that question made in opening possibilities.
I see that kind of thinking happening at Clairbourn in all kinds of ways. The CFA has found new and innovative ways to bring community together. The teachers have found amazing new tools and strategies to communicate effectively, assess understanding, and ensure learning without losing the joy. Parents have been finding all kinds of new strategies for maintaining sanity and balance in their lives. And the school has found creative ways to celebrate our student successes and milestones.
None of it is easy, not all of the strategies work, but the exploration and experimentation are all opportunities to find better methods and eventually success in achieving our goals.
Well done Cougars! Even the Rocket Scientists would be impressed!

- Under the "Resources" tab look for a tile with a link to Magnus.
- Click on the Magnus tile. It should log you right into your Magnus account without having to re-enter credentials to log on.
- Click or hover over your name within Magnus (top left of screen).
- Choose "Change Credentials."
- Create a Username & Password that only you know and will remember. This username/password combination will be used as your PHR mobile app login only.
- On your phone, download the "Magnus Mobile V2" app from the Apple Store or the Google Play store, and log in using your newly created username and password.
- Select the button that says COVID-19 and fill out the form. (You will only see this button if your child is SCHEDULED to be on campus.)
- This is the screen you will show the school-official before your child exits the car. The green "GO" at the top signals that the health form has been completed. (You will only be able to generate this screen using the app if your child is SCHEDULED to be on campus.)

Internet Videos Worth Watching
Clairbourn celebrates the world-class problem-solvers, armed with their knowledge of physics, equipment, and natural forces, who just solved a seriously disruptive blockage of the Suez Canal by a ship run aground. The ship that was blocking the canal is 400 meters long and was carries18,000 - 20,000 shipping containers. The ship is 20 times heavier than the Eiffel Tower. It took strategies based on physics, an unusually high tide, 13 tug boats, and the removal of 30,000 cubic meters of sand by diggers to free the ship.
The Suez Canal is one of the world's busiest shipping routes through which 52 ships pass each day, accounting for 12% of the total world's global trade. Over 300 ships were trapped behind the Ever Given during the six-day blockage and additional ships were diverted to take different and longer routes. Food, medicine, livestock shipments all experienced serious delays. Thanks to the monumental effort of the men and women working to solve the problem on multiple fronts, the ship is now freed and the canal is clear for shipping to resume.
93 million viewers can't be wrong. See why this compilation video of a variety of ships being launched into the water is so captivating--not only for the systems in place to launch ships, but also for the spectacle it creates with giant waves.

Scholarship: How to Raise a Scholar
According to academic performance expert Andrew Martin, who is a professor of educational psychology at UNSW, “Improving your child's academic performance can be as simple as tuning into your child, finding the key to their motivation and engagement, then establishing good routines.”
Students should be assessed for their “will and skill.”
For “will,” the areas of self-confidence, persistence, and a student’s value placed on a subject they are learning needs to be examined followed by specific strategies for solving roadblocks or de-motivating factors.
The “skill” part covers items like time-management, organization, and reading ability. When skill problems are identified, improvement will follow if those problems are specifically addressed with practical strategies.
“It's also important to have a set place and time to study…. Routine is a child and adolescent's best friend, it's where mental health lies, so the more you can develop a routine early in primary school the better," says Professor Martin.
Lastly, acquiring a helpful definition of academic success as a parent can make all the difference to their child doing well in their studies. "If parents define success in terms of personal best, rather than expecting perfect scores," says Professor Martin. "You watch those kids become motivated and their academic performance increase!"

Staying Healthy: Start Singing!
Regardless of whether you can carry a tune, get singing! Scientific research shows that there are 10 key benefits to body and mind when you add a singing practice to your day.
1. It relieves stress! As long as you’re singing in a location that doesn’t make you anxious (like being on a stage), belting out a song will be followed by a sense of relaxation.
2. Singing stimulates your immune response and releases immunoglobulin A which fights off infection. Listening to music may relax you, but singing has this added benefit!
3. Singing is proven to raise pain tolerance and releases endorphins which produce positive feelings if you sing in a group. (Please sing safely with a group over Zoom during COVID restrictions.)
4. Singing raises the level of oxytocin in the brain, which is also known as the “love hormone,” and increases feelings of inclusion if you sing with a group. (Please sing safely with a group over Zoom during COVID restrictions.)
8. Singing helps with grief. A 2019 study showed choir singers dealing with loss avoided symptoms of worsening depression and stabilized their sense of wellbeing when compared to non-singers.
9. It can improve mental health conditions requiring treatment according to a 2018 UK study.
10. Research shows singing can improve speaking ability and help to treat speech difficulties.

Music in the Home: A Positive Aspect of COVID Times
According to writer Nancy Valentine, "...a positive outcome of COVID is that people of all ages are discovering or rekindling a passion for making music at home. The market for music products has surged in sales of some instruments.
In times before TV and movies “Haus-Musik” was a very popular tradition. People would gather in their parlors, aka living rooms, to make music together. Everyone played an instrument of some sort. Even young children would be included.
Amid the atmosphere of anxiety on so many fronts, people are returning to music-making as a welcome respite. It is no secret that playing an instrument requires concentration and total absorption and increases brain power in children. It also is valuable in retaining memory, so its benefits span all age ranges."

New COVID Business Help
"Small Los Angeles County businesses in the personal care and retail sector can apply for $10,000 grants starting April 5....this new round of funding, called the Keep Our Shops on the Block Grant, will dedicate $4.7 million to personal care and retail businesses.
Eligible businesses include hair and beauty salons, nail salons, estheticians, skin-care specialists, barbershops, dry cleaners, bakeries, and automotive stores, among others. They must have an open storefront in L.A. County, excluding the city of Los Angeles, and make less than $1 million in revenue per year, officials said.

New COVID Relief: Health Insurance Cost Help
Did you know you can now get help paying for your health insurance if you are unemployed?
The new American Rescue Plan means that, "As of April 1, the federal government will start paying the full premiums for Americans who are getting their health insurance through COBRA, a federal program that allows the jobless to continue being covered through their former employer’s health insurance plan for at least 18 months at personal cost.
To be eligible for this new benefit, Americans must qualify for COBRA, either because they lost their job or saw a reduction in hours, but cannot be eligible for Medicare or another health care plan either through their spouse or a new employer. The plan also allows those who previously declined COBRA but would have otherwise been eligible to benefit.
