Clairbourn Connection
Dear Clairbourn Families,
As you know, yesterday was conference day for our community. It was a great opportunity to connect, learn, share, and plan. Connection is one of the hallmarks of independent schools and we take it to the next level here, becoming a school family. I have loved watching the community both reconnecting and connecting for the first time this year once we were able to have parents on campus again. This family relationship is what brings us all together to be supportive of each other rather than critical, to help rather than deter, to cheer for the successes of others rather than be jealous, and to encourage growth rather than mock. I am always grateful when I see the students do this with each other and when I see the parents modeling it for their students.
As we continue through the final quarter of the year, take advantage of the opportunities for connecting with others, volunteering at special lunches or the carnival, or offering to be a host family to the new families next year (check with the CFA on how to do this). These connections make our community strong, positive, supportive, and successful, ultimately benefiting our students.

Third Grade Virtual Field Trip: Smithsonian Natural History Museum
Last week, the third grade class had a virtual field trip with a specialist from the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. The topic was insect survival and the students explored what makes an insect unique. They learned insects have more species and live in more places than any other animal and they investigated and identified the survival techniques of the Manduca Sexta (the Tobacco Hornworm) in its larval stage. Students discovered this insect's adaptations by using their scientific skills of observation and sketching. They had a lot of fun and created some wonderful scientific sketches of this insect.

Animal Adaptation
Learning Through Experimenting
Our first graders studied animal adaptations and how animals survive in different climates. Students learned how whales use their blubber to survive the cold. They experienced this by putting their hands in buckets of ice cold water! One hand was protected by the "blubber" which was Crisco shortening, while the other hand was not. Students quickly realized the hand protected by the "blubber" was warm and the hand not protected by the "blubber" was freezing. Keep on staying curious, Cougars! |
