Service Learning Elective

Grades 7 & 8 Support Huntington Hospital

Clairbourn 7th- and 8th-graders, in the Middle School Service Elective, made a total of 20 posters for each department at Huntington Hospital so the staff would feel the school community's gratitude, thanks, and support.

Special features include access to a recorded message and animation of the poster graphics when the included QR codes are scanned with a cell phone.

The idea originated with the students themselves and they worked on them for two hours each week over Zoom. This Friday, Technology Specialist Paul Barker will deliver the printed posters to Stacy Miller who serves as the Director of Volunteer & Customer Services at Huntington Hospital.

Prep For Campus Arrival

Use the Magnus App for Health Screening

Getting Ready to Come to Campus: For any parent who would like to get ready for their child to come to campus, you can follow these directions:
  1. Log into Cougarnet at clairbourn.myschoolapp.com with your own (parent) account. This will not work if you log in as a student.
  2. Under the "Resources" tab look for a tile with a link to Magnus.
  3. Click on the Magnus tile. It should log you right into your Magnus account without having to re-enter credentials to log on.
  4. Click or hover over your name within Magnus (top left of screen).
  5. Choose "Change Credentials."
  6. Create a Username & Password that only you know and will remember. This username/password combination will be used as your PHR mobile app login only.
  7. On your phone, download the "Magnus Mobile V2" app from the Apple Store or the Google Play store, and log in using your newly created username and password.
  8. Select the button that says COVID-19 and fill out the form. (You will only see this button if your child is SCHEDULED to be on campus.)
  9. This is the screen you will show the school-official before your child exits the car. The green "GO" at the top signals that the health form has been completed. (You will only be able to generate this screen using the app if your child is SCHEDULED to be on campus.)
  10. If you have any questions on the Magnus App, please contact Mr. Jubilado, Clairbourn's Health Officer  at njubilado@clairbourn.org.

Learn about Pi - Celebrated Annually on March 14 (3/14)
This video by Reynoldo Lopes for TED explains, "The ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter is always the same: 3.14159... and on and on (literally!) forever. This irrational number, pi, has an infinite number of digits, so we'll never figure out its exact value no matter how close we seem to get. Pi has vast applications to the study of music, financial models, and even the density of the universe."

Leadership: How to Build & Leverage Your Experience

It's a fact that high schools, colleges, and employers value people with leadership experience, and a lot of that experience can be built during a student's time in school.

A recent article from Rasmussen University explains how normal school activities can translate into powerful experiences for a student's leadership resume:

1. Sports: Team captains and sports award winners learn how people can work well together, stay motivated, and achieve a common goal which applies to most leadership situations.

2. Student Travel Abroad: The Australia and Costa Rica trips can help students deal with unfamiliar situations, adversity, and cultural differences -- all of which are skills that leaders need.

3. Social Group Activities:
Joining clubs and groups can help students develop a confident, well-rounded personality, which is useful for future leaders who need to inspire confidence in others!

4. Internships:
When a student pursues and lands an internship, that can demonstrate their motivation to learn about something and work towards it. Taking the initiative is an important quality of leaders.

5. Volunteering:
It can show that a student has commitment and passion, as well as the ability to make a difference -- all of which are definitely signs of a true leader.

6. Student Government:
Being elected to an office is not enough to prove leadership ability. A student needs to show how they made their school better with their ideas and actions.  Leaders should always be able to prove they have made a positive impact.

7. Passion Projects:
If a student creates an unique opportunity to share something they love, teach it to others, or get people to help with their community project, they will stand out, not only for their leadership skills, but also for their individual expression leadership.

8. Teamwork Opportunities:
When students are assigned roles as part of a school project or team, those experiences can provide important early leadership experience. Being able to talk about how you did your part, worked to improve your role, or helped the whole team succeed is a great way to show you can lead from any position.

Staying Healthy: Harness the Inner Voice

Best-selling author Eric Barker writes about "how to be awesome at life." His most recent blog post from, "Barking Up the Wrong Tree" covers insights on mental health and control gathered from the book Chatter by Ethan Kross.

Here are three key points to help harness your inner voice instead of becoming it's victim:

1. Don't Listen When Distressed: Mental chatter is supposed to help steer you away from past mistakes or guide your future. Ethan Kross says, "...a robust body of new research has demonstrated that when we experience distress, engaging in introspection often does significantly more harm than good. It undermines our performance at work, interferes with our ability to make good decisions, and negatively influences our relationships."

2. Say Your Name:
Use your own name, "Fred," "Lisa," etc. instead of making "I" statements when talking about something that gives you anxiety. That action helps to create mental distance and a better emotional reaction to the situation. Ethan Kross says, "...a high usage of first-person-singular pronouns, a phenomenon called I-talk, is a reliable marker of negative emotion.

3. Reframe Threats as Challenges: The rush of adrenaline caused by "flight or fight" hormones can be interpreted positively or negatively. Ethan Kross says, "tell yourself that your sudden rapid breathing, pounding heartbeat, and sweaty palms are there not to sabotage you but to help you respond to a challenge."

Is it Really the World's Best Ice Cream?

You'll have to try it to see!  Watch for the upcoming opening of Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream located just north of Clairbourn at 3405 East Foothill Boulevard in East Pasadena where Togo's sandwich shop used to be.  Books, magazine, and newspaper coverage all agree that it is one of the best ice cream experiences offered in the entire world.
