From Head of School
Let’s keep moving forward!
Dear Clairbourn Families,
I am so excited for our students! Our 8th graders were accepted to wonderful schools and many have really difficult decisions to make since they had multiple offers. It is so exciting to see them proudly wear their sweatshirts for the high schools of their choice. Way to go Class of 2022!!
I am also excited to hear about our track team. They represented us well at the League Track Meet yesterday. Their effort was 100% and the students all showed tremendous HEART! Go Cougars!
I also love hearing from our students at the end of each day. As they wait for their turn to go out to the curb, I have a chance to ask them how their day went. I often ask them to tell me the best part of their day. Sometimes the answer is recess, and I would love that too as a great chance to play with my friends. But more often than not, they tell me about a project they were working on such as planting seeds in science, giving a presentation as an expert, attending a virtual field trip, or writing a poem. I love to see their eyes light up when they describe the writing process or the way they worked together to solve a problem in math. They LOVE learning!
They are certainly scholars and leaders with heart!!

Clairbourn Insights
Middle School Drop and Build Day
On 3-14, we celebrated Pi and all things circular! The ratio of the circumference to the diameter of any circle is Pi, or approximately 3.14. Middle school students were challenged with a circle-themed Drop Everything & Build this month!
Students had to deliver a ping pong ball to a cup in the center of a bullseye target, but they were not allowed to reach over the outer circle of the bullseye. Students used their engineering thinking to build devices that could support and aim the ping pong ball to hit the mark. Our students did a great job exploring the options!
Here is a list of our March Drop and Build winners: sixth grade -Isabella and Jayden, seventh grade (tie) - Marcus & Nathan and Arthur & Rogan. Eighth grade and the overall winners were Kaelly and Marcel. Congratulations, Cougars!

Outdoor Learning
Exploring The Ground Beneath Our Feet
Students enjoyed studying the ground beneath their feet and the processes of weathering, erosion, and deposition which shape our planet. Each sixth grader took a sample of soil from various locations in the jungle in order to observe the complex composition of the mixture. They then worked in groups to set up quadrats to analyze the texture of the soil, which is an important property that affects soil drainage and fertility. Students enjoyed working with their hands and learning outdoors! They determined most of the soil in the jungle is a sandy loam. Soil is so much more than dirt!

Sustainable Energy
Dr. Hoard Visited Eighth Grade
As part of the eighth grade science study of energy resources, students enjoyed a visit from Dr. Donald Hoard. Dr. Hoard is the Director of Data Science at the Center for Sustainable Energy and is also a current eighth grade parent. He explained how a data scientist turns information into useful knowledge. The focus of his job is to decarbonize transportation and educate the community about sustainable energy. Dr. Hoard helped our students understand how to make good choices as consumers, voters, and citizens of planet Earth. Thank you, Dr. Hoard!
