Clairbourn's Preschool Immersive Space Unit
Outer space, with its jewel-like planets, shimmering stars, and astronauts with their cool technology, is very exciting to the imagination! Naturally, Clairbourn preschoolers dove right in to their STEM unit about space with great enthusiasm. The whole class got busy learning about the
Milky Way, our
solar system, and
the planets—and some students even learned the
planet names in order!
The Clairbourn Summer Academy Program is offered by the well-respected organization Parker-Anderson. This company provides summer learning opportunities on our campus where students are able to explore their interests, develop skills, and prepare for the next level of academic challenges in the fall. Our Campus is Closing After Friday:
No Students on Campus March 16-30
Dear Clairbourn Community,
Thank you for your deep caring for our school. As you know the news about COVID-19 changes moment by moment and we have been diligent as a school community in staying current with reliable information. Clairbourn has been monitoring all of the official channels and has also been in constant communication with the other independent schools in the area.
At this time, the Pasadena Public Health Department has not asked us to close, and there is no known case in the Clairbourn community. However, at this time, the likelihood of being asked to close is high and we want to be prepared for our remote learning plan.
This is not an easy decision, since we know that the most effective learning situation is to have our students in class, especially for the younger students. We know that changing the schedule with relatively short notice may be a difficulty for many families.
We also know that if we are asked to teach remotely by the Health Department, we need to have focused preparation for that and should make every effort to work out as many of the issues as possible.
Our Current Plan Is:
- Clairbourn will be open Friday, March 13, 2020 to allow students to do a small practice session with their teachers and to get all of their materials.
- Campus will be closed to students March 16-30 as an extended Spring Break.
- Teachers will spend March 16-18 preparing lessons and working on the remote learning tools that we will use if the Health Department asks us to close or if the situation requires it.
- All field trips for March and April have been postponed or cancelled.
- The Shakespeare play for this year will be recorded rather than performed live.
- All classrooms will get an additional thorough cleaning during the student absence.
- Essential functions at school will remain open unless directed otherwise (reception, maintenance, finance).
Technical Support:
If you have questions about technology at your home, you can contact Mr. Paul Barker at pbarker@clairbourn.org. He will do his best to help.
Please be sure that you continue to watch your inbox for further communications. This is a fluid situation and so it is best to remain flexible with our plans so we can adapt as needed.
How You Can Help:
The CDC and Health Department advise us that in addition to social distancing, another critical way to prevent the spread of coronavirus is to practice good hygiene. As we have shared previously, this includes washing your hands often with soap and hot water for at least 20 seconds and using hand sanitizers, especially after using the restroom or touching common area surfaces such as doorknobs, railings, and countertops. And remember to avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
We encourage families to practice social distancing in their own lives. This means avoiding large-scale events such as professional sports competitions, large gatherings, or smaller but highly social events such as parties. Consider restricting travel and check the CDC recommendations if you must travel.
I am grateful for the Clairbourn community. The topic for our Morning Assembly this past week has been about filling each other’s buckets and also keeping our own buckets full. (Ask your students about this.) This kind of public health challenge can be a good opportunity to practice our own bucket filling. It can be a stressful time for a community where people may need to have a little more patience, a little extra forgiveness, a little more compassion. Each of these things can fill up the buckets of those around us and our own too. This is one way we can support our community and take care of each other.
