Celebrate Progress and Growth

Dear Clairbourn Families,

This week the kindergarten classes watched some of their eggs hatch! They have been watching the eggs in the incubator, wondering if anything would ever happen. This week the pipping started and each class got to watch the chicks emerge from the shells and take their first steps. These steps were wobbly and resulted in much tripping and falling. As the students watched, the chicks became more sure-footed and capable. After just a day or two, they all became fluffy little chicks and were able to run around with ease.

It is such a great lesson for the kindergarten students, and the rest of us! Whenever we try something new, we look a little shaky and sometimes silly, but with continued practice, we improve. The amount of practice certainly depends on the activity and our experience with similar tasks, but the concept is true for everyone. Sustained practice always causes improvement!  And although we will never know for sure, I suspect the chick didn't spend any time worrying about how silly he looked when he tripped or how the other chicks were judging him, he just kept at his task and got up to walk.

This is also an exciting week in our admissions season. The 8th graders hear from their high schools tomorrow about the results of their applications. We all are ready to cheer for them when they get the good news! We are sending out notifications tomorrow for the Clairbourn applicants for next year, and it looks to be a wonderful group of new families. It is exciting to see the progress and growth for both groups (and the chicks)!

Collaborative Teaching

Middle School Social Studies and English

Our middle school seventh graders enjoyed an insightful, collaborative project in their English and social studies classes. Students read, discussed, and wrote about the historical fiction novel, The Samurai's Tale. The story took place in feudal Japan in the 1500s. Students studied this era in social studies, along with European history. They gained a deeper understanding of the class hierarchy and power struggles during that time. The study was further enhanced by a Google Earth Japanese castle tour and a Japanese manor design group activity. Seventh graders worked in groups to complete a Hero's Journey jamboard where they analyzed their own strengths and challenges to complete both a personal shield and a group shield. They produced detailed artwork during the course of this unique, collaborative experience. Well done, Cougars!
