Head of School Update

The "Roomies" and "Zoomies" Have Started

Dear Clairbourn Families,

We are so happy to hear children on campus again! Kindergarten came to school today to see their classroom for their start to on-campus school!

We have two groups of students. The ones who are coming on campus for instruction are our “Roomies” and the ones who are doing remote instruction are our “Zoomies!” Next week our Grade 1 Roomies will be on campus.

We are also launching our survey of Grade 2 & 3 families tomorrow and are hoping for a quick response from them. Once we get that response, we can start bringing those grades back as well for on-campus instruction.  Next up will be the Grade 4 & 5 survey.

With each step, we have had parent meetings where parents have asked such thoughtful, insightful, and practical questions. I am grateful for the partnership with the families to ensure a successful launch into this new chapter.

Coming To Campus

Use the Magnus App for Health Screening

Getting Ready to Come to Campus: For any parent who would like to get ready for their child to come to campus, you can follow these directions:
  1. Log into Cougarnet at clairbourn.myschoolapp.com with your own (parent) account. This will not work if you log in as a student.
  2. Under the "Resources" tab look for a tile with a link to Magnus.
  3. Click on the Magnus tile. It should log you right into your Magnus account without having to re-enter credentials to log on.
  4. Click or hover over your name within Magnus (top left of screen).
  5. Choose "Change Credentials."
  6. Create a Username & Password that only you know and will remember. This username/password combination will be used as your PHR mobile app login only.
  7. On your phone, download the "Magnus Mobile V2" app from the Apple Store or the Google Play store, and log in using your newly created username and password.
  8. Select the button that says COVID-19 and fill out the form. (You will only see this button if your child is SCHEDULED to be on campus.)
  9. This is the screen you will show the school-official before your child exits the car. The green "GO" at the top signals that the health form has been completed. (You will only be able to generate this screen using the app if your child is SCHEDULED to be on campus.)
  10. If you have any questions on the Magnus App, please contact Mr. Jubilado, Clairbourn's Health Officer  at njubilado@clairbourn.org.

Drop Everything & Build Lanterns!

Middle School science classes had a "Drop Everything & Build" challenge for February to make paper lanterns.
Students first looked at some of the lantern festivals and legends surrounding Lunar New Year. They then had to use a kit of materials and follow a design criteria: Their lanterns had to be at least 30cm tall, the majority of the sides had to be covered in tissue paper so that a light could shine through it, and it had to be made within 30 minutes.

The activity included time for reflection and asked students to record what they thought about during brainstorming time, how brainstorming influenced their design, and their thoughts about STEAM vs. STEM.

Check out how these three students answered the following question: STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. Should art be included?

"I think art fits...because most people who work in STEM related jobs will have to draw at some point. Whether it's blueprints, mental art, or just drawing to plan something out, there is art in it. Drawing is really useful especially in the brainstorming process." - Shalom L. Grade 6

"If the NASA spaceship was completely white, no one would like it. Each brushstroke on a painting is important. So is every detail on a spaceship or a car." - Arthur Z. Grade 6

"It's important to have a good visual in order to successfully build something. Shapes that are 2D or 3D can be connected to art, so I think I'd much prefer STEAM over STEM." - Kelly Z. Grade 6

While studying electrical engineering at USC, Earl Woolfork saw what a nuisance and hazzard wired headphones were for people going about their daily business. He and his brother Cedric decided to create a way to replace the cord and deliver high quality sound at the same time. They now own and operate One-E-Way, an electronic company headquartered here in Southern California. Their patents, licensed by major corporations for technology products, are in wide use today.

Leadership: Why Not You?

Gitanjali Rao is Time magazine's First Kid of the Year.
She says about her accomplishments, “If I can do It, you can do it!”

Starting in third grade, she decided to become a leader and make a difference
in order to address real-world problems. That year she learned about how kids' health was horribly impacted by lead in the water in Flint, Michigan.

She researched the problem and designed a device, called Tethys, which can attach to a cell phone and detect lead in water immediately. The device is almost done with the testing phase and should be ready to use publicly in 2022.

She also built the Kindly app to help prevent cyberbullying and the Epione device which acts as an early warning system to help doctors detect opioid addiction in patients.

She's on a mission to inspire more kids to be leaders now and start using their science skills to solve big problems. “I don’t look like your typical scientist. It’s not easy when you don’t see anyone else like you. So I really want to put out that message: If I can do it, you can do it, and anyone can do it.”

Staying Healthy:
Get Into Nature

Psychologist David Strayer shares in his TED talk "Restore Your Brain With Nature,"
that most people with North American lifestyles spend about 10 hours a day on some form of a screen. That is contrasted with only about about 30 minutes spent outdoors.

When people are working in front of screens all day, the pre-frontal cortex of the brain, which governs problem-solving, decision-making, and planning, is in heavy use and likely to be overworked and needs rejuvenation.

He explains that a nature walk gives, "...your prefrontal cortex a chance to rejuvenate by doing things like replacing the glucose and glycogen energy reserves so that when you come back after having taken a walk or rested for a little bit, you just have more mental energy to allocate when you’re trying to attack a problem."
