Together We Are Clairbourn

Dear Clairbourn Families,

I am so excited to see the contracts coming in for our returning families. It means we are poised to continue our growth. Our applications are strong for next year and we have more families who are excited to join you in this wonderful community.

For those families who have not yet returned their contracts, please do so immediately by logging into CougarNet with your own account. We are starting the process of reviewing applications and need to know how many of the students to accept. If we don't have a contract with a deposit, we are unable to hold your spot, so please return the contracts with your deposit today!

I am also excited to see the middle school CAST (Clairbourn After School Thespians) continue their work on their upcoming play. It looks like it will be a fun show based on the rehearsals I have been seeing. I am eager to be able to return to a live performance format for this show. Barring any unforeseen changes in protocols, we will be holding three live performances for our students and parents. Stay tuned for more information as we get closer to the shows in March!

A Comet Journey with Our Fifth Grade

Our fifth graders went on a Clues from Comets virtual field trip and investigated the process of using observations to understand cause-and-effect relationships between events, exemplified by our study  of comets over time. Presented live from Griffith Observatory’s Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon Theater, the program guided the students through centuries of records kept on the appearances of comets.

Students witnessed the manufacture of a comet from household supplies such as dry ice. They embarked on a journey to a real comet fashioned from actual photographs from the Rosetta mission, and explored the nature of water in all its forms – solid, liquid, and gas. Next time when you see a fifth grader on campus, ask them why water is so important to life on Earth and what a comet is made of!!

National California Day

Do you know the name of the world’s largest tree, the birthplace of the internet and the avocado capital of the world?

The General Sherman in Sequoia National Park is the largest tree in the world. California is also the birthplace of the internet and the avocado capital of the world! Our students shared what they are grateful for in our Golden State and gave Clairbourn a California vibe by showing their state spirit on National California Day on Tuesday!
The Science of Flight

Forces of Flight: Weight, Lift, Thrust, Drag

The eighth grade class recently wrapped up their study of forces in fluids, including several hands-on labs to learn more about the four forces of flight: weight, lift, thrust, and drag. Students built and compared two different paper airplanes to determine the effect of weight, wing size, and wing design on distance and duration of flight. To learn more about the effect of turbulence on drag, students built paper kites and varied the length of the tails. The kites with smaller tails barely took flight, while the kites with longer tails were able to fly high even with very little wind!
